Why All England Fans Should Think About Supporting Aston Villa
As a Wolves fan, I should be feeling strong dislike/borderlines hatred for West Midlands rivals Aston Villa. But as an England fan, it’s very hard not to wish Villa well. Gareth Barry may be gone, but players like Gabby Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey, Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and James Milner regularly feature in Villa’s starting lineup. Stephen Warnock too, who could maybe have a role to play at left back for England this summer.
So, Wolves loyalties or not, I was genuinely pleased to see Villa beat Burnley 5-2 this weekend, with all five goals coming from England internationals. Ashley Young got one, Stewart Downing two, while Heskey and Agbonlahor were also on the scoresheet.
I’m not sure how many of these Villa players will go to South Africa this June. Heskey is a certainty, Milner probably not too far behind, while Young, Downing and Agbonlahor all have a bit of work to do in order to make the plane. All I know is I’m glad these players are getting a chance at playing regular first team football in a somewhat successful team, and so for that reason alone I wish Martin O’Neill’s men all the best between now and May.
