Who Would You Most Like To See England Knockout in South Africa

So, I was reading Daryl’s (super) post about Diego Maradona’s Hand of God. I’m not a particuarly vindictive person or anything, but I did think…well, wouldn’t it be really sweet if we knocked out Diego’s Argentina in South Africa?

While we beat Argentina in 2002, the main focus then was revenge for 1998 and David Beckham redeeming himself against the very same team. (the video, above still gives me goosebumps. Though I’ve no idea what Motty is on about).

For me, I think actually getting one over on Diego would be really really nice. And it could happen, in a big knockout match all over again. Mind you losing would be a bit much to bear.

Anyway my question to you, is there a team that you would love to see England knockout in South Africa? Or do you not mind as long as England go a long way?

Maybe you are more of a traditionalist and would like to see England beat Germany on the way to glory. Certainly they’ve beaten us enough times, and a victory on penalties would be very nice – but I don’t know if my wits could manage a penalty shoot out against Germany again.

I don’t really have any bad feeling toward the Germans anymore either. Perhaps that famous 5-1 victory that Sven led us to was cathartic – it seemed to clear the memories of 1990/6 to some degree.

Perhaps you wish Scotland were there. I sort of do. I mean they never get very far, but like all the home nations, I kind of wish them well. Well not as well as us, obviously.

Portugal certainly have some recent history for us. And France have beaten us a couple of times in the last few years. Perhaps its somebody utterly random. But who would you most like to see England beat in South Africa

I am partial to any nation that knocks England out actually. Just saying.

A slice of revenge against El Diego would be pretty enjoyable. Maybe with two goals from Wayne Rooney – one handball and the other a magnificent dribbling effort. Then again, I’ve become so fond of Leo Messi lately, I’d take no pleasure from seeing him exit.

Actually, given recent history I’d most like to beat the Portuguese. Not because of any ill will, but just because they sent us packing in our previous two tournament efforts. On penalties would be nice.

Or… beating Brazil or Spain, which would go some way towards giving our players the confidence that they can beat anybody. Not saying any of the above is going to happen. Just daydreaming about how enjoyable it would all be.

I hate those teams that defeats England. I always pray for the victory of England.

  • Vicks

Would love England to beat Spain (everyone been bragging about them). To be World Champions, we need to beat Spain.
    Another team would be Brazil.

Vicks, same with me. To be the best, one has to beat the best sides in the world. And Spain at the moment is in that bracket.

  • Dr.AdolphKaiser

    Would love England dumping Italy.
But England will not make it that far.

  • RooneyFan

It would be nice to have England beat Argentina or Brazil. However, I dont have much hopes. For some reason, England always seems to underperform at the World Cup.
    Is Engand Overrated?

    RooneyFan:

    My word.

England fans are notoriously underinformed as to the real powers in international football.

CLEARLY THEY ARE ISLAND FOLKS WITH NO CLUE TO THE REAL WORLD.

Rooney well – England tops. Hahahaha. Even if they had Messi it would not stand the test of a WC tournament. Remember Ronaldo’s pathetic good-byes at WC 06 and Euro 08 ?

  • http://deleted Earthwire

I am absolutly convinced that GERMANY will win their
    4th star in South Africa.

No other team except Argentina and Brazil have THAT potential.

Italy? Haha. Can#t perpetuate sly manouevers.
    France? Haha.

Netherlands? Well – almost, but yet another time: not quite. Sorry, folks,.

    Spain? Drowning in self-importance.

England? You’re joking, aren’t you? After all, they must not bring in all their non-English stars. (Even Abramovitch can’t buy the lot.) And English alone? Alone.

I think I would like us to do in Brazil as we never seem to get the upper hand ever with those guys. Also Messi and the Argies would be a nice scalp too with all the hype about the Gifted Midget

  • SeanTheBrit

I would so like england to really dig at the Germans just like we did 9 years ago. What a win we achieved that day, 5-1. Owen’s hat-trick I will firmly remember. Or a nice win against Argentina will do for me anytime.

  • SeanTheBrit

Beat germany any day. We painfully lost in 1990 and 1996. However what a victory against them in 2001. 5-1. Remember that day very well.

I want to see England knock off ALL of the teams in the FIFA 2010 Cup. I live in Canada but my mother is English and I have many relatives who live in England.
    Go England Go!

It will be between Germany, Brazil, and Spain.
England and France out after the group stage.

  • theTruth

if rooney gets injured it’s over after the first elimination round. with rooney the max is the quarters maybe semis since the best and hardest teams are on the other side of the draw. enland needs more than an Italian to lead them to WC glory. they need them to play for them on the pitch as well. nice campaign for epl in CL this year too.

I agree it would be nice to put one over on Maradona but provided we win our group and they win their’s England would not meet Argentina until the final.

That assumes they get past Germany and Spain or Portugal and we get past France and Brazil or Holland.

Putting one over on the French and then Brazil in the semis and beating Germany or Argentina in the final!

That would be revenge all round!!!

  • Anna

Oh man, more than ever I’m so gonna support England this year for the FIFA 2010 World Cup…I’m Brazilian but the truth is, I’m so unhappy with the Brazilian team, they’re too weak and not what the brazilian people really expected to be. I don’t really think they’ll make it this time. And well… my fiancee is english, so yeah. Go, go, go England Go!:)
Oh yeah…please, beat Argentina!!! I’d love love love to see that! haha!
