Everyone Drop Everything: Rooney’s Injured

wayneSo I was originally working on another post (which will be forthcoming) but then I received this news. Wayne Rooney, yes the same Wayne Rooney who can’t not score goals right now, the same Wayne Rooney who is England’s best hope come June, limped off the pitch today against Bayern. After scoring 2 minutes in to the Champions League match, continuing his ridiculous run of form, he was injured in the dying minutes of the game with an ankle injury. There’s no news on how bad the injury is yet, but he does look in quite a bit of pain doesn’t he? I’m hoping it’s not a ligament injury which can take absolute months to heal (having gone through one myself, it’s a very frustrating 8-12 weeks), and leaves that ankle permanently weakened. If everyone could please join me in crossing all of my fingers and toes that Wayne Rooney is ok, that’d be great.

Much as I want England to do well in the World Cup, and much as I realise how that depends on a fit and in form Rooney, I feel queasy at watching him try and take chunks out of opponents week in week out.

I also feel queasy at the media generally ignoring his thuggish habits, particularly on TV where his over the top tackles are often greeted with a wimpy admiring giggle.

It seems that what goes around comes around. Did the Bayern Munich player tread deliberately on his foot? I suspect he did but I can’t blame him. Something rare happened to Rooney tonight . He got what he deserved.

I shouted at my television when I saw Rooney limping off today. Can’t imagine us at World Cup 2010 without him, and don’t want to.

We’ll know more tomorrow, but here’s a quote from Ferguson published about 10pm UK time tonight:

“He’s obviously hurt his ankle. It’s too early to say [but] I don’t think it’s terribly serious.”

    Let’s hope he’s right.

It wasn’t on purpose actually. The Bayern player stepped on Rooney’s foot (it looked accidental), Rooney jumped up in pain, came back down and landed badly on the other foot, twisting it in the process. I honestly don’t think he has thuggish habits anymore, I think that’s an outdated reputation. He is enthusiastic and he is physical but I would go so far as thuggish

lol, didn’t he have a similar injury right before WC 2006? I remember all the English fans freaking out.

    Hope he gets well.

My guess is a bad high ankle sprain. He’ll miss Chelsea on Saturday and the return against Bayern but I think he’ll be OK for South Africa.

If it’s worse and we lose him altogether, I guess we’ll find out how good a coach Capello really is.

2-4 weeks. He’s fine for the World Cup. You may all resume breathing.

Phew. Thanks Matilda, I was turning purple.

Waking to my alarm at 4:30am simply to check the headlines in England about a mans ankle, it’s hard not to ask, Why do we do this to ourselves again?

Rooney will not elevate a mediocre reservoir into an assembley of title aspirants. If only Walcott could really deliver at long last.

feeling pitty for cesc fabregas due to his injury.it may dismiss him from playing in the world cup
