England Squad to Play Egypt on March 3rd, 2010

Fabio Capello has named his 24 man England squad to play Egypt this Wednesday, March 3rd at Wembley. Is is as follows:

David James, Robert Green, Joe Hart; Wes Brown, James Milner, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Joleon Lescott, Ryan Shawcross, Leighton Baines, Stephen Warnock; David Beckham, Theo Walcott, Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard, Michael Carrick, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Stewart Downing; Emile Heskey, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch, Carlton Cole.

A few things worth noting:

1. Seems England players can’t stay out of trouble. Stoke’s 22 year old central defender Ryan Shawcross (who is having an excellent season by all accounts) was named to the squad just hours after breaking Arsenal midfielder Joe Ledley’s Aaron Ramsey’s leg with a nasty, nasty tackle in a nasty, nasty collision. It was bad. But in Shawcross’ defence, he did look absolutely horrified afterwards. Capello apparently delayed naming the squad by 40 minutes, as he and assistant Franco Baldini debated whether to cross out Shawcross’ name.

2. The two guys fighting for the left back spot vs Egypt (and possibly vs USA, Algeria and Slovenia) are Leighton Baines and Stephen Warnock. I’d be happy to see either of them start against Egypt.

3. With Glen Johnson still recovering from injury, James Milner appears to be in this squad as a right back. I say this because in the squad listing on the FA website, Milner and Wes Brown are the first two names. I fully expect to see Milner start at right vs Egypt, and think it might be a smart idea.

4. Theo Walcott and Stewart Downing are back. Joe Cole is not. Here’s what Capello had to say about Cole: “There are some problems for him because he is not back like the player I remember,” Capello said. “We have to wait, maybe in the last two months he will improve a lot.”

5. Carlton Cole is in, but no space for Gabby Agbonlahor or Bobby Zamora. Not sure what more Bobby Z could have done to get an England call lately, but seems Capello wasn’t impressed enough.

joe ledley? where the hell did you get that from. Hes called AARON RAMSEY mate

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

Yeah, my bad. Got my Welsh wonders mixed up is all.

  • http://arsenal.theoffside.com Martin

That’s great — break a leg, get a call-up. One more reason to root against England…

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

To be fair, it was get a call up, break a leg, then management reconsiders call up but ultimately gives you benefit of doubt.

So it’s not as if it’s a direct reward for breaking Ramsey’s leg.

  • Sam

To be fair it was a fast 50/50 challenge, anything could’ve happened.

  • Sam

And it’s about time some others from ‘lesser’ teams got a chance instead of these pros that are so far up their own …………..

  • Krankster

Bobby zamora deserves a call up, i mean honestly give him a run out. Heskey is just losing it now zamora is now the player heskey was.
And that challenge was a freak accident a ugly but not malicious challenge.

  • ste blue nose

baines to start as left back he is the most on form left back in the prem at the momment !

  • OMAR TAMER

EGYPT WILL WIN ON ENGLAND ON WEDNESDAY AT LEAST 1:0 ,2:1 OR 2:0.
    BEST WISHES FOR EGYPT .
I HOPE THEY DO IT AGAIN LIKE DEFEATING ITALY.
EGYPT THE FIRST AFRICAN ARABIAN TEAM TO DEFEAT ITALY AND ENGLAND.

  • Jake

…’with a nasty, nasty tackle. It was bad.’ – Daryl do you know anything about this game called football?
It was a fair challenge which if anything was just timed late. It wasn’t malicious and i’m sure he didnt go into the challenge looking to break the lads leg. You yourself could see that from his reaction.

On another note, Joe Hart should be given a go against Egypt. Why not? He’s performed well against tough opposition so far and is far less likely to make mistakes out of the other two keepers Capello has called up.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

    Jake,

I’ll admit I worded it badly, but I think you misunderstand my meaning. I meant that it looked nasty, as in it was horrible to watch. I didn’t mean it as a judgement on Shawcross or his intentions.

A better phrase would have been “a nasty a nasty collision” I suppose. But still, there was no need for the rhetorical question.

  • Barney

1 of my friends is a cousin of Ramsey and says its a clean break so they can just snap it back together and then we were joking about my if my friend broke his leg we could of just got a hammer and tapped it and it would be better

  • http://hammyend.com Dan

Shame Zamora’s not in the squad (he’s been excellent this season) but it’s actually great news for Fulham. This friendly falls between a few big games – Spurs in the Cup on Saturday and Juventus in Europe – so we’d much rather have him fresh for those than distracted by an international call-up. He also plays better with something to prove so he might be fired up to show Capello what he’s missed out on.

  • Nasser william

England will be onared playing with pharos

  • http://twitter.com/brady15x Liam Brady

Hart, Milner, Terry, Upson, Warnock, Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, Downing, Rooney, Defoe.

That would be my starting 11 against Egypt.. I think Stephen Warnock is finally showing what he can do at Aston Villa and if Ashley Cole dosent make the world cup and with Wayne Bridge in the wilderness, i believe Warnock should get his chance.

  • Mudri

Why isn’t your legendary Beck’s captain of the National side? Or do I need to address him as “Golden Balls” ? Oh thats right you can’t have a bench player as Captain – why is he in the team? I wish you all the very best in South Africa – you’ll need it ……….. boy you guys always botch things up when it comes to the crunch. Not even Capello can help you at these Championships.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

Beckham resigned the captaincy in 2006 Mudri. Simple as that. He’s in the team because he’s still a decent player.

  • Aron

Mudri stick to Aussie rules mate, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Peter Shilton is a legend but it doesn’t mean we are going to ask him to Captain the national team!!

  • threelions

Beckham is still in the team because the is still the best crosser/long ball passer and dead ball/set pice expert in england and with the height of heskey, crouch, gerrad, terry…etc and Rooney(who nowadays only seems to score with his head)..i think he has to be included.

  • Jonathan

And some more glaring omissions … no Ashley Young (one of the fastest, fittest and most skilful Englishmen the Premier League has seen) or Aaron Lennon (or is he injured?) Without those 2, there’s a lack of any sizzling pace, other than that of Wright-Phillips, but his form and game time are down. And Joe Cole on a bad day is better than most on a good: a great play-maker and worker. I’d ditch Terry and Heskey – a couple of old has-beens. And put in James Collins, and either Michael Owen or Darren Bent. At least Bent’s scoring goals, 3rd highest tally of the Englishmen in the Premier League. Generally, the team’s looking a bit pedestrian and I’d be sad if this was close to the squad that went to South Africa.

}f.capello: do you agree with me????

  • Dave

sham5347 just a guess but your a spuds fan no?

Dont read too much into that was just to see if i was right.

England have a good base of players this year, alot more competition for places and that really excites me and is the difference to the past few seasons. Cole is decent but in my opionion and most of yours it seems Warnock and BAines both doing the business. I like Baines myself, always had a problem with cole when he was at arsenal yea he bombed fwd but when he recieved the ball from pires all he ever did was pass is straight back to him, baines gets fwd and is a supurb crosser to boot.

Hart has done enough for me so he should play for sure. Milner at right back, is that a long term option no, but i assume FC is testing his versitility at national level, that said J.milner should be on the plane, brilliant season for villa. Ash is a good player but i think he’s going to be a short this time round, im not a huge fan of downing, hes good yes but is he national quality im not sure. Another villa player who i am very dissapointed isnt in the squad for tonight is gabi, he’s a super player, great strength and pace and a decent finish.
Lastly i agree with the mass that Bobby Z should be there, my best mate grew up playing footy with him and says he’s never played as well as he has this season, top chap too. fingers crossed he’ll be given a second look.
good luck tonight, England 3-1 win.
