England 3-1 Egypt Highlights
Slightly odd game at Wembley, which I supposed isn’t a huge surprise given all that’s happened in the buildup. Speaking of which, John Terry looked less than sure of himself, beginning the game by fluffing a simple pass out wide to Wes Brown.
What else can we say? Matty Upson needs to not fall over when crosses come in. But he probably knew that already. Leighton Baines didn’t shine, but didn’t harm his reputation either. Plus he played a full game for England, which has to go down as valuable experience.
Theo Walcott looked like a talented guy who hasn’t played enough games recently, which is exactly what he is. The Rooney-Defoe partnership wasn’t a disaster, but didn’t look particularly dangerous either. Peter Crouch came off the bench and scored twice, thereby surely booking himself a definite seat on the plane to South Africa (though I feel sorry for whoever’s sitting in front of those long legs). James Milner’s brief but effective appearance in midfield should also have been enough to make his summer plans official too. Shaun Wright-Phillips also came off the bench and bagged a goal, but I still see two from Beckham, Walcott and Lennon making the squad ahead of him.
Quick summation: An unimpressive first half from England but a much improved second half, especially the last 20 minutes or so where we won the game. Maybe most importantly, we’ve finally gotten that first game of the post-John-Terry-funny-business era out of the way. So now we can concentrate on preparing the best possible England team for World Cup 2010.
