Argentina Gets Thrashed, Makes England Look Less Bad

german man pileI don’t know if you, my lovely reader, have had the strength to continue watching the World Cup after The Incident. I, rather surprisingly, have continued to watch and quite enjoyed the quarters. This morning when the Argentina-Germany match arrived, I was conflicted. On the one hand, it might be nice to see Germany torn to shreds, on the other hand if Germany do really well, it would make England look less bad. Not to mention the fact that both teams are our big rivals, and generally I don’t really want either of them to do well.

I said from the start that it would be a high scoring game, both sides have explosive offense, and Germany’s defense looked rather suspect at times against England. However, when I made this prediction, I did assume that some of the goals would be coming from the Argentinian side of things. It ended 4-0 to Germany, which, might I remind you, is worse than England did. Germany proved their worth today. Argentina, with attacking stars like Higuain, Tevez, and Messi, rarely threatened the calm, clinical German team. It must be said, although I never would have guessed this before the tournament, Germany look like a really good shot to win the whole thing. They don’t rely on the individual talent of their players, but truly function as a unit, as a team rather than 11 men.

After having thought about it, I’m rather glad Germany look amazing. As much as my vengeful heart wishes ill upon Joachim Löw and his merry band of men, my pride is pleased by the result. Sure, we got pretty torn up, but it was against a bloody good side, and this England team was never going to be bloody good. Also, I feel that since Germany beat Argentina 4-0, and beat England by only 4-1, really that’s like England beating Argentina 1-0, due to the Transitive Property of Football Results. Which is definitely a real thing, and not something I just made up with my hazy memory of maths properties. Take that, Diego!

Yes, England would be much better if the second goal was allowed. The Argens only made me relax when enjoy the win without real pressure. If only Spain is also that arrogant like the Agren.

Wow, what a pretentious blog. England played terrible and didn't deserve to win, get over it. I feel so sorry for the players, such a high expectation made by all their arsehole fans and idiotic media personnel.

Whats pretentious about it ? Your an idiot, he said it like it is, England lost badly to Germany, but losing badly against a side that went on to whoop Argentina 4-0 isnt quite so bad when you put it into perspective, England wasnt good enough we all know that, the current England side never had any real chance of getting much further than they did, England has fallen to the same old problem they have had many times in the past, a manager that drags out the same old team, players past their prime living on previous glory days that should have been replaced in the England side with new young talent, The German manager did this and it served them well.

I realise they didn't deserve to win, and I thought I had acknowledged that by saying: “we got pretty torn up, but it was against a bloody good side, and this England team was never going to be bloody good.”
I never expected England to win or anything, but based on the quality of our players, and our performances in qualifying, I expected us to perform better than we did. Us “arsehole fans” (or do I count as “idiotic media personnel” in this context?) have a right to be disappointed in that performance. We have all seen every one of those players play better than they did, and while I didn't expect them to pull off a miracle, I think it's perfectly fair to expect them to play up to their potential. I'll start feeling sorry for the players when they start doing their job.

You completely missed the point. In fact, I'm not even sure you even read the blog. Matilda was merely saying that Germany's performance helps give us context. We were far inferior to the German side, but it appears that we aren't the only ones. Knowing that we got annihilated by a team that is annihilating other world powers helps ease the pain a bit.
As for the high expectations, I think you have mischaracterized hope for expectations. I don't know what kind of fan you are, but I actually route for my team and get disappointed when they lose. What would you suggest we arseholes do differently? Most people on this board predicted a relatively poor world cup performance. But that didn't mean they weren't disappointed when it happened. Upsets happen. That's the wonderful thing about this game. Do you think Uruguayans predicted they'd make it to the semifinals? No. Do you think the Ghanians predicted they'd make it to the semifinals? No. But that doesn't mean that it didn't hurt when they failed to do so.

i actully felt so much better after watching the argentina game
but to say england did better than argetina, yet i dont think they played as well as argentina.

but i think england needs to have a serious think as does capello. we need to get rid of players that say 'they hate england and everyone init' and get some fresh new talent who would love the chance to play for their teams!

Thank you so much for that well worded and thought out post.
As an England fan I expected my team to play football and die for the shirt that they ware, not give the worst performance ever seen. As A supporter of my National team I would expect the Players to do a job, give a world beating performance and bring the world cup home. The management teams are there to assist and help them do that by seeing that the players are doing just that and changing things around if they are not.
Getting beaten by a much better side after giving their all I can accept. But these players did not give their all. Tired, they claim was a major problem, well perhaps instead of spending time in the Boozer and on the golf course they should put their feet up.
Not many of the England players played as well as WE know they can, we expected to do a lot better than we did.
