England

And so, its Germany in the Last 16

You know what, I'd take that on Sunday.

You know what, I'd take that on Sunday.

With a sort of grim inevitability, England will play Germany on Sunday. England performed really well to finally get off to winning ways this Afternoon, but as did USA just about, which put England second in the group. A stunning German winner means its the old enemy in the next round.

I know, I know. You aren’t looking forward to it. Germany looked fantastic in their opener against Australia, were robbed of at least a draw in the second game, and did enough in the third.

The Germans are not invincible. If we play to our full strength, we’ve got every chance I think. And while there is no team I would hate to be knocked out by, there are fewer teams I’d love to see us beat. Especially on penalties.

Ah yes penalties. Its pretty tempting to conclude that those might come up on Sunday night. How sweet would it be to finally beat the hoodoo against the Germans?

I’m saying lets be realistic, but lets be positive. I mean, what the hell. No-one in this tournament has stood really far out just yet, and maybe we can have a run at it. We’ll probably have Argentina in the next round, and I think that’s winnable. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. Its Germany, Sunday, and its not as bad as you think.

We’re unbeaten, and the only goal we’ve conceded was a freak goal. We’ve reasons to be cheerful if we can start playing well as well.

  • The_Alchemist

sorry mate, 5-6 after penalty shootout.

  • http://england.worldcupblog.org/ Rob

    To England, yeah?

  • vN

A cocky German team and an under-performing England scraping through. Hopeful England against confident Germans. An Argentina team managed by Maradona possibly waiting for us in the next round. Surely any movie we've ever seen points to only one conclusion. Bring on the Germans…

  • Bense235

Bring. It. On. Will come down to day shape, but oddly enough, I have a positive feeling about this which is rare enough. Can't wait for the penalties…

  • johnny b BAD

I have great respect for the German people, their national team, and their style of play… but sorry lads, this is England's year.

Germany -> Argentina -> Spain -> Brazil -> WORLD CHAMPIONS.

  • Bense235

Same goes the other way round. But then again… man, put away the crack pipe ;-) We're in for a good 5 days of smack talk. Well, Germany maybe for a couple of more days.

  • Kevin

No, it's just as bad as you think. Germany will win this game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bryan-Crossland/799300175 Bryan Crossland

Come you krauts, it's time for redemption.

  • JoseJosue

Talking to several Germans, this rivalry really does only go one way… Most Germans consider Netherlands their biggest rival.

Anyhow, should be a epic match!

  • Bense235

Redemption? What redemption? There was plenty of redemption before on both sides…

  • Arminius

No penalties this time, dear Inglunders – only one:

    You have to face Germany.

And afterwards a looooong march through yet another vast valley of humiliation, frustration, and envy.

Better stick to crocket. Cracket? Crucket? Anyway.

  • Rdhabich

    Correctly:
Germany > London Heathrow > frustrated English homes

  • Berliner

WC: England-Germany 4:2 WC 1970: Germany kicks out England
    2001 England-Germany 5:1 WC 1982: see above
    WC 1990: see above
    Euro '96 : see above

    LOL infinite

  • vN

You missed one out, though, I think. Now, let me see…which one is it…?

  • Bense235

True to some degree. Would have taken more German losses in the past 40 years for some real rivalry. “The” German rivalry is the one with the Dutch. For England, it's Germany.

  • steven.

now, as much as you'd like to, don't mention the war .. i mentioned it once but i think i got away with it…..

  • vN

I don't think the English really regard anyone as a real rival. We're not really bothered about any team really, but we do get a certain satisfaction out of beating the Argentinians most of all, then the Germans, and then having a laugh at the French with quiet contempt. Could be a perfect World Cup!!

  • vN

    War…?

  • Bense235

The English not regarding anyone as a “real rival”? Say, for how long are you English now? As you mentioned, it's the Argies and the Krauts. And then, who does not love to see France fail?

Since I was born, I think! I don't know, I think we'd like to believe we have a proper rivalry more than we really do. Historically, it's been with the French for us, but I'm not sure it translates over to sport so much. Still, we got a bit of history with you lot and the Argies, so bring it on!

  • Rolandzebub

This how it was supposed to be. Very much looking forward to this, along with Mexico-Argentina.

  • Alan

lol, the video cheered me up.
    England will win the game.
Come on England, keep on scorin' !

    Hopes are high,
    Grass is green,
    Zero five
    And England wins!
    Feels alright,
    Robert's Green.
    Hopes are high,
    England wins!
    Germans fly
    Back and stink,
    I feel so high -
    England wins!

  • Jam_green

haha well we won WW2 and WW1 :D
plus god probably doesnt look kindly on those nazi bastards!

  • Greek

Would you please, for the love of God, send the Germans back to where they belong????? Which is … oblivion. The entire world hates them and it's about time the inventors of football taught the arrogant Arians an important lesson

  • http://www.gutenb.org morimando

I'm really looking forward to this game. Sorry though that England has to go home this soon. It's going to be an exciting game :D

  • http://japan.worldcupblog.org/ Aidan

I'm really down after yesterday's qualification since Engladn failed to win the group. Having had so many chances it was so annoying and has left England facing a far harder task. Whereas one of either USA, Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea will be in the semi-finals…England messed up big style by not scoring a second goal.

As for the rivalry with Germany…I think it's similar to how Scotland feel about a rivalry with England – let's see:

So from England's perspective looking to Germany, but equally from Scotland's perspective looking at England…

    - more successful near neighbour – check
    - historical reasons for rivalry based on wars – check
    - always “up for it” and claiming “bring them on” and then usually losing with the occasional win thrown in – check
    - treated by the other as being “not particularly a big rival” due to generally being worse than them – check

England have messed up and thrown away a potential semi-final.

Sorry for being miserable and not going along with the standard Ingerland response…

  • Jelle

Nice to see England going home.

  • Bense235

But then again, the Superarian 7 foot blonde Rehhagel taught the Greeks a lesson and they became EURO champs 2004. Oh, and lately, Germany bailed out Greece with 142 Million Euros so they didn't go bancrupt.

To be fair: I can easily understand now all the wrath any single Greek must hold against these Germans. It is so obvious!

  • Bense235

    Hey, you started it… :-)

  • Karlkerl

    Alan

if England play as well as you can write poetry … they are really doomed. :-)

  • http://twitter.com/avileitner Avi Leitner

Its kinda turning out to be a lil like WW2! The French Surrender early, USA arrive last minute, And were left fighting Germany!

  • Greek

Rehhagel is a not so German German. As for the 142 million Euros, it's a small amount compared to the billions we paid to SIEMENS AG, Rheinmettal AG, Druckfarben, HW and other German companies for all the unnecessary and uncompleted public works awarded to them. Not to mention the reparations owed to Greece for all the murders and destructions to my country during the occupation of Greece by the Germans (you also stole the Greek gold depository). My dear English friends!!!!!! God save the King!!!! Send them home!!!!!

  • Bense235

Yeah, you're obviousely still living in a world where England has a king…

  • vN

Beckenbauer now says we are burnt out.

  • Alan

No correlation between my poetry and England play. Fortunately. (or 'unfortunately', if you' d been more humble).
    England is the winner.

  • steven.

    we did not….you invaded Poland!

seriously though, should be a cracker….

  • Bense235

Everybody in Germany was on backpacking vacation from 1939 to 1945. Don't you watch Family Guy?

  • Greek

A bit dissapointed with your reply. Is that really all you can say? I liked the one about backpacking vacation though. I have a sincere question for you, since you are thw only German I've ever talked to. Please don't be offended. it's not my purpose to offend you or the Germans. Here's the question: What does Schweinsteigger (don.t know if I wrote it correctly) mean in German? I have a friend who claims that the meaning of the name is “he who rides pigs”

  • Stefan

Oh please Bense. Isn´t this about football in th eyear 2010.

We have a very talented but young team. We miss at least one worldclass defender and one stricker. We need space for our play so Podolski, Müller and Özil can be effective. We have problems against well organized teams with a stable defence.

And England? Always hyped and often early at home. Two awfull matches against one good performance. The english defenders can get real problems against our mitfield. I don´t think they really like the type of players we have. And Rooney? At least he can only blame himself for a bad performance given the fact that our defenders are not even solid.

I think this match is absolutly unpredictable. At least england is kindly enough to continue the good old english tradition of playing without a real goalkeeper.

  • GermanyBeatsUK

yes but the only difference between WW2 and this game is, that germany will win this round hardly ;-)

  • Anne993

England is going to lose against Germany.

  • Bense235

I guess it was all my bad, I forgot trolls shouldn't be feeded.

But wait a second, so you're purpose is NOT to offend any Germans? I must have read >>The entire world hates them<< and >>arrogant Arians<< somehow wrong then. All of this war b/s isn't hurtful anymore, it's just growing boring on me.

About Schweinsteiger: The literal translation would be “pig climber”, but that's not the meaning of it. That name's from Bavaria and back in the day, “Steiger” came from “Stiege” which was another word for “step/stair”, figuratively for an outside barn some steps away. Overall meaning: Schweinsteigers ancestors were pig breeders who could afford an own barn for the pigs so they could live in seperate buildings, as contrary to many other peasants, that had the pigsty directly attached to their houses.

And no. That name has no greek roots.

  • Bense235

I'm not saying we're gonna crush England or so. Sure this game will be a thriller. England supposedly has more individual class, but they look tired and tactically a bit unsafe, too. It's all open.

  • englandhater

Germany will win 2-0 on sunday. England have been garbage in this world cup and with self-consumed spoiled idiots like Terry and Gerrard , they can never defeat a great team like Germany with young stars like Oezil , Podolsi , Lamh and Schweinsteiger. come on Germany!!

  • steven.

actually, no .. that show lowers your IQ faster than listening to Ally McCoist ..

  • gl

I (South Germany) would rather see the Nationalelf winning against England than against the Netherlands – because England trashtalks too much^^.
I think for the german team it's dangerous to get in disadvantage – because they are young and might loose head as seen against Serbien at the end of the 1st and 2nd Half.

  • avatar

did you enjoy your holiday england under acheivers your not fit to wear the shirt

  • Crapengland

Wheres the wooden spoon for Englosers..Ha Ha they deserved it, they played crap. pup team down my local could play better. to many primadonnas..

  • baz

how do i feel???? deep down i was rooting for england, i m always a fool every time!! forget abt the lampard disallowed goal and blaming the refs, it was an appalling team play by england, school boy defence and mistakes, lacking pace… terry shud never be played from the start of this world cup (morally and ethically speaking), the substitution … See Moreof milner?? why?? he was putting more decent crosses in till joe cole came in, the german showed england how simple it is to go forward on the break and score goals… bloody useless…
