Capello: No 100th Cap for Beckham
Several newspapers are reporting today that England manager Fabio Capello will not name David Beckham in his squad for England’s upcoming friendly match against Switzerland. Since Beckham hasn’t played regular competitive football since he moved to America (did you spot the obligatory snobbish European MLS joke?) Capello apparently feels that Beckham won’t be match-fit for the Switzerland game.
Considering Fabio Capello’s legendary dedication to winning in friendlies – he once swapped Ronaldo for a second holding midfielder to protect a 1-0 lead in a meaningless friendly in China – Beckham’s days in the English squad might be numbered. He certainly isn’t likely to get a chance to play in any World Cup qualifiers any time soon, considering the recent form of Shaun Wright-Phillips, Aaron Lennon, and David Bentley (my money’s on the latter).
For those wondering: I should be back to posting more regularly now that England have some fixtures coming up. The idea of posting about the inane drivel coming out of the press about the England squad in December/January didn’t really appeal, hence my absence.
