Four Associations Cup - a Missed Opportunity

September 23rd, 2008 | By: Daryl | 6 Comments »

So the Four Associations Cup is go for 2011. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland will compete in a round robin league format with two matches in February 2011 and the rest in May. All games will take place at a (by then) refurbished Lansdowne Road in Dublin.
So it’s basically the old Home Nations tournament [...]

Seemingly Important Question: Lampard or Gerrard?

September 16th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 8 Comments »

Please don’t fall asleep. I know this is an old question, but it’s one that Fabio Capello will have to answer for England’s next World Qualifiers (Kazakhstan at home on October 11th and Belarus away on October 15th, since you ask).
Assuming Fabio Capello agrees with everyone else in the world (except Sven) that Gerrard and [...]

England “probably the best in Europe”, says Bilic

September 11th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 1 Comment »

Here’s Croatia boss Slaven Bilic’s take on yesterday’s game:
“In the first half, we were looking good and we thought we could get a positive result,” Bilic said. “But, we were brutally punished in the second half.”
“We knew that Capello had two options, either Walcott or Beckham,” Bilic said. “It turned out that Walcott was the [...]

Capello Names 23 for Andorra/Croatia

August 31st, 2008 | By: Daryl | 6 Comments »

Fabio Capello has named his 23 man squad for Andorra/Croatia, and it looks like this:
Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham United), Paul Robinson (Blackburn Rovers)
Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), John Terry (Chelsea), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Matthew Upson (West Ham United)
Midfielders: [...]

Carrick Out, Jenas In, Zzzzz

August 18th, 2008 | By: Daryl | No Comments »

That’s right, Michael Carrick has pulled out of the England squad with an ankle injury, and Jermaine Jenas has been called up to replace him.
It’s times like these that make me think about how dull the England team really is.
Sigh.

If Spain Can Do It…

July 1st, 2008 | By: Daryl | 7 Comments »

…why can’t we?
I always thought of Spain as our brothers in underachievement. Lots of quality players, but never in danger of actually winning another trophy. We even won our last trophies at about the same (Spain Euro ‘64, England WC ‘66). Their failure made me feel better about ours.
But Spain went and ruined all that [...]

We’re Staying Home, 42 Years of Hurt

June 25th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 2 Comments »

Not much going on with England other than the constant reminders that we’re not involved with Euro 2008. I’m sure Colin Kazim-Richards is a nice lad, but Turkey having a half-English winger isn’t quite the same as us having a team there is it?
Above is a funny but depressing “Three Lions” pardoy video capturing the [...]

England vs T&T, or: Carrie Bradshaw on the Big Screen

June 2nd, 2008 | By: Daryl | No Comments »

I missed England’s win over T&T because I went to see the Sex and the City movie with a certain special someone. Because I had to? Nope. Because I wanted to? Yep. And I’m not ashamed to admit it either.
Sex and the City was one of the funniest shows on TV, and a damn good [...]

Incoherent Thoughts from England 2-0 USA

May 29th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 3 Comments »

Hmm.
- We won, which is obviously a good thing. But it was only half convincing. For example…
- Nice to see England at least try and keep possession of the ball and play short passes. But there were still far too many long balls. Playing long diagonal balls for David Beckham to challenge for in [...]

Micky Owen Out of England Friendlies

May 23rd, 2008 | By: Daryl | 1 Comment »

Michael Owen (pictured doing some ever so subtle advertising work) can not catch a break. First the poor guy was out of form and so - quite rightly - left on the bench for Fabio Capello’s first two games. But he found some serious form recently for Newcastle and could have expected to play against [...]
