England U-21s for Wales Playoff
Stuart Pearce’s Under 21 team have a big two-legged playoff against Wales this month, with the winner getting a place at the UEFA Under 21 Championship finals.
Here’s the squad he’s picked, plenty of familiar faces:
Keepers:
Hart (Manchester City), Heaton (Manchester Utd), Lewis (Peterborough);
Defenders:
Bertrand (Chelsea), Cranie (Portsmouth), Gardner (Aston Villa), Mancienne (Chelsea), Richards (Manchester City), Taylor (Newcastle), Wheater (Middlesbrough);
Midfielders:
Cattermole (Wigan), Huddlestone (Tottenham), Johnson (Middlesbrough), Lallana (Southampton), Lennon (Tottenham), Milner (Aston Villa), Muamba (Bolton), Noble (West Ham), O’Hara (Tottenham);
Forwards:
Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Campbell (Manchester United), Derbyshire (Blackburn), Ebanks-Blake (Wolves).
First leg is 10th October at Cardiff’s Ninian Park, return leg 14th October at Villa Park. Winner over two legs goes to the 2009 UEFA Under 21 Championships in Sweden next summer.
Nothing confirmed yet obviously, but Pearce has suggested he’ll take the strongest possible squad to Sweden should we qualify, including young Mr. Theo Walcott.

Including young Mr. Theo Walcott…Stuart Pearce had revealed that during the World Cup qualifier away at Croatia, he asked Capello about including Walcott for the two-legged playoffs. And the Italian just burst out laughing. But yeah, I am aware Pearce had said before that if they qualify, he wants to bring Walcott along to Sweden.
Anyhow, Arsene Wenger is not keen on the idea of Walcott returning to the U-21s - http://www.sportinglife.com/football/international/england/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=soccer/08/10/02/manual_152326.html&TEAMHD=england

123,
Ashley Young is (despite his name) 23, as is David Nugent, so both are ineligible. Walcott is with the senior squad and Michael Johnson is injured. Think we’ll almost definitely see Johnson back in the squad when fit and - as Diana pointed out - we may be seeing Walcott back with the U-21s this summer.
