Why John Terry Should Never Captain England Again

May 26th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 5 Comments »

Rumour has it that Fabio Capello will give John Terry the England armband for this Wednesday’s game against USA, as a sort of consolation prize for Terry missing that penalty in the Champions League final. I’ve been mulling it over and am now 100% certain that I don’t want John Terry to captain England ever again. Here’s why:

Not because Terry spat at Carlos Tevez. I’m not convinced that he did. But I think the petty vindictiveness of whatever he was saying while pretending to wipe his nose is exactly what we don’t want leading England.

Yes, he’s brave, and it’s unfortunate he missed that penalty. But he’s not classy, and he makes stupid decisions.

Don’t forget that though it was Drogba who was sent off for slapping Vidic, that big brawl in extra time began because Terry started in on Carlos Tevez for not returning the ball fast enough. Terry didn’t juts cost Chelsea the Champions League by missing his penalty, he also did it by creating the situation for Drogba to be sent off.

I want an England captain that’s calm under pressure and intelligent, not someone who shouts a lot. And definitely not someone who takes disabled parking spots. I’m always hearing that England need more “passion”. But they don’t, they need more intelligence.

Worrying that Terry has a potential phycological problem with his next penalty shoot out, which of course could be for England.

I have to agree. I really like Terry on the pitch - he’s one of the defenders I would always want on my side during a match. But he’s just not captain material, for all the reasons you stated. The captain’s the guy pulling people out of a potential fight, and doing everything to avoid the team getting a red card, and that’s not John Terry. Ferdinand seems like a better choice.

John Terry is a low, filthy bully.

Rio is a far better choice, and Owen Hargreaves is not far behind him in my ranking.

Rio’s actions throughout the fight show that he is captain material.
