A contract is a contract is a contract with an out clause. It’s not of question of if, it’s a question of when. Beckham can leave now and MLS can get a few bucks out of it, or he can leave after the next season for free.

Why would you wish harm on someone? That’s just rude…

Beckham joined the Galaxy when he was dumped out of the England team by McClaren and it looked like his international career was over. After winning league titles and cups and the Champions League, if your international career is over, making a few bucks while sunning yourself in America doesn’t sound half bad.

Then something out of the ordinary happened. England didn’t make the Euro, McClaren was dumped out and Fabio, Beckham’s old boss at Madrid, was put in place. Suddenly, the idea of the chance to play in the next World Cup came up. There’s only one way to keep up with the rest of the football world, and that’s to play with them. I can hardly blame Beckham for wanting to get back to the top level and play one more World Cup, because that’s really the ultimate goal for him and at his age, he only has one more shot at it.

So… betraying the MLS, stabbing them in the back, pissing all over them? I think enough of our own home grown sports stars have done that through drug abuse, violence, and other extracurricular activities. But–wanting to aspire to something greater? Give the guy a break.

I agree that Beckham has let down American soccer by wanting to leave. But I’m arguing for an England team picked on form, and this is a right midfielder who’s in form so he deserves to play. Simple as that.
