Why I’d Like to See David Beckham Start vs Spain

February 5th, 2009 | By: Daryl | 6 Comments »

It had become fashionable to think David Beckham didn’t belong in an England shirt while he was trudging through MLS games. And there was a certain sadness to his stream of 10 minute cameo appearances that inched his way up the all-time cap-winner chart.

But all of a sudden, he’s playing for Milan, probably staying, and looking a bit good.

Capello didn’t exactly promise to include him in the squad against Spain, but the bossman was positive enough when asked for his opinion recently.

I’m 99% sure we’ll be seeing Beckham’s name when the 23 is announced, especially with Walcott injured, David Bentley looking a bit lame and Aaron Lennon in the under 21 squad.

If Beckham plays in Seville, he’ll join Bobby Moore as England’s joint second most capped player with 108. With Goldenballs in form, I’d argue that he deserves to start that game on merit alone. Put simply, he’s the most in-form English right mid at the moment, and – whoever you are – that should be enough to get you a place in starting XI.

Why are you so supportive of this miserable wretch? it’s appalling to see you gushing over him! is this some sort of mancrush? If MLS had any gonads they would show him who is in charge and FORCE him back to LA regardless of his “desires”. A contract is a contract is a contract is a contract!! he is showing MLS or the Galaxy NO respect. He would never do this to a European league or team. If MLS and/or the Galaxy don’t rein him in than they are bigger jokes than we thought and deserve to flounder and die. I also hope this despicable himbo suffers a career ending injury if he does move to Milan and never again plays for England. Beckham is a spineless, egocentric piece of crap and his behavior should not be rewarded. He has just stabbed MLS, the Galaxy and all American fans in the back and pissed all over us for good measure….and you’re PRAISING him?????????

leona,

I agree that Beckham has let down American soccer by wanting to leave. But I’m arguing for an England team picked on form, and this is a right midfielder who’s in form so he deserves to play. Simple as that.

I really hate this Beckham. Best moment was when Alpay beat him up.

Why I’d like to see Beckham in the England squad against Spain – David Silva or AndrĂ©s Iniesta will make minced meat out of him.

leona:

A contract is a contract is a contract with an out clause. It’s not of question of if, it’s a question of when. Beckham can leave now and MLS can get a few bucks out of it, or he can leave after the next season for free.

Why would you wish harm on someone? That’s just rude…

Beckham joined the Galaxy when he was dumped out of the England team by McClaren and it looked like his international career was over. After winning league titles and cups and the Champions League, if your international career is over, making a few bucks while sunning yourself in America doesn’t sound half bad.

Then something out of the ordinary happened. England didn’t make the Euro, McClaren was dumped out and Fabio, Beckham’s old boss at Madrid, was put in place. Suddenly, the idea of the chance to play in the next World Cup came up. There’s only one way to keep up with the rest of the football world, and that’s to play with them. I can hardly blame Beckham for wanting to get back to the top level and play one more World Cup, because that’s really the ultimate goal for him and at his age, he only has one more shot at it.

So… betraying the MLS, stabbing them in the back, pissing all over them? I think enough of our own home grown sports stars have done that through drug abuse, violence, and other extracurricular activities. But–wanting to aspire to something greater? Give the guy a break.
