The Four Possible England Captains Are…
There’s quite a big deal being made of the fact that David Beckham will captain England against Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow night. Yes, it’s nice for him. Especially after Steve Mac looked to have ended Goldenballs England career. But it shouldn’t be such a huge shock.
Beckham has done the job (and done it pretty well as far as I’m concerned) before. So with all his experience he’s the ideal choice to lead a team of young players who are a bit green when it comes to international football.
But here’s the interesting thing to come out of all this:
In response to all the hubbub this week, Capello has said:
“When I took over as manager I decided to choose a different captain for each game, and David was on one of the four players I thought of.
“David will be the last captain – but only for this game.”
So that means the final decision will be a four way fight between:
Steven Gerrard
Rio Ferdinand
John Terry
David Beckham
My order of preference:
1. Rio Ferdinand
2. Steven Gerrard
3. David Beckham
4. John Terry
And though I’m not keen on Terry, he’d still do a decent enough job. The really interesting thing here is that England have so many potential captains. So whoever Capello chooses, it’s good to know that the young talents that (we hope) will emerge in the next two years (Walcott, Richard, Lennon etc) will have plenty of older heads to guide them.
