How Not To Act Like England Vice-Captain, Presented to You by Steven Gerrard

Let’s face it: Stevie G is a pretty sketchy character. Not that John Terry didn’t have his little bumps along the way before finally getting relieved of his position as England captain, but those were all off the field. Gerrard has had his share of off-the-field-drama after getting arrested for punching a DJ (which made my gran’s estimation of the man go from “gentleman footballer” to “stupid boy”). All of that is excusable, as long as it stays off the pitch.

But this? This is not how a professional footballer should behave. Unfortunately, in the eyes of justice, since Atwell, the ref at the time, saw the incident and decided against punishing Gerrard, the FA can’t take any action against him. This is all after, lest we forget, he apparently flashed the V-sign at Andre Mariner in Liverpool’s defeat to Wigan last week.

This is completely unacceptable, and I sincerely hope Fabio Capello has his eye on Steven and will give him a warning. Rooney, it may be time to suggest your captaincy.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does the ‘v’ sign mean?

This, my dear, is why God invented Wikipedia.

Rooney might look like the thug, but Gerrard…
I sure miss the days of Robbie Fowler and Gary Lineker!

  • Peter

It’s worth noting that Wes Brown committed a nearly identical offense (albeit during a tussle for the ball) against Gerrard around the 21st minute of play — and that is merely the proverbial tip of the iceberg with respect to the dirty play that Brown himself displayed over the game’s length. Not that this exculpates Gerrard, by any means. A captain should be above holding grudges or going for such classless revenge.

That said, Rooney? Really? Like he hasn’t gone for a cheap hit when frustrated by dirty marking. A man with such a notorious temper should likewise not take the top spot.

He has a temper 2 years ago. He’s settled down a lot in the past couple seasons, and really we haven’t seen that temper flare. His rep as a dirty, angry player is outdated.

He also has some great qualities for a captain: respect for and from his teammates, he’s not selfish on the field, and leads a pretty quiet out the field life. I’m no Manchester United fan, but I’m a huge Wayne Rooney fan, and I think he’s our best candidate for captain when Ferdinand bows out of the national team, which may be rather soon. He is no spring chicken.

this might sound biased and in no way condone Gerrard’s actions but finding a true “gentleman” in the England squad would be a fools errand ..

That’s a good point steven. Recent events make it hard to argue. You could even go through the XI by rap sheet. Glen Johnson – stole a toilet seat, John Terry – allegedly etc, Rio Ferdinand – skipped drug test, Ashley Cole – cheated on his hot wife. And so on. That said, I get the feeling someone like David James is a good guy.

Similar point is can you think of anyone in the England squad you’d actually enjoy a conversation with? I think David James, Peter Crouch and Owen Hargreaves (if he ever returns to the England squad) are the only ones who are able to string a sentence together without constant errms, y’knows, likes etc.

Hope England can walk further in this World Cup. Btw I still like the gentle England.

  • seif

Derbyshire came off the bench in the 55′ to score the winner in the 68′ in the away victory against bitter rivals Panathinaikos (0-1)!! He is becoming a hero in Greece! Looking as if he is the future of the England team!!

  • bluemoon

I disagree it’s time to lift Rooney to captain or vice-captain because he still lift the team’s hope and be a scores machines. That is much pressure for him and it’s not good to give anymore pressure.
