Gerrard Can Keep Playing, For Now…

When news that Steven Gerrard was assisting police with their inquries filtered through yesterday, I crossed fingers, toes, legs and everything else and hoped it would blow over.

Details on exactly what happened aren’t clear, but there was some sort of argument involving Gerrard+mates vs the DJ @ Lounge Inn. Said DJ ended up in hospital, while Gerrard+mates ended up in jail for the night.

“Gerrard released without charge” was what I was hoping for. But after 24 hours in custody, Gerrard has been charged with assault and affray. Two other men have also been charged, but neither of them play for England, so I’m not too worried about them.

But I am worried about Stevie G.

In a statement, a Merseyside Police spokesman said:

“Merseyside Police has charged Steven Gerrard, 28 years, of Formby, Sefton, John Doran, 29, and Ian Smith, 19 years, both from Huyton, Liverpool, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray following an incident at Bold Street in Southport in the early hours of Monday, December 29.

“The three men will be appearing at North Sefton Magistrates’ Court on January 23.”

No idea what’s going to happen obviously, but I know Joey Barton got six months behind bars for assault and affray. If that happens to Gerrard then that’s a major blow to the Three Lions.

Word from the FA is that there’ll be no international ban for Gerrard. At least as long as this is just a charge and not a conviction. Here’s what an FA spokesman had to say:

“No one knows the full facts so we are not even discussing this matter.

“No player is banned from representing England while they are the subject of a police inquiry.

“That position would only change in the case of a conviction for a serious criminal offence. Then the case would be considered on its individual merits.”

No official word from Fabio Capello yet, but I’ll be this wasn’t on his Christmas wish list.

I doubt any of us aside from the parties involved will ever really know what happened. I just hope that the court will take into account his character and how this is a first time thing for him. He should get probation at the absolute worse.
