England Squad to Face Slovenia and (More Importantly) Croatia

September 1st, 2009 | By: Daryl | 8 Comments »

The England squad for the following two games (both at home)

vs Slovenia, friendly, September 5th
vs Croatia, WCQ, September 9th

is as follows:

Squad: Foster (Manchester United), Green (West Ham), Robinson (Blackburn), Johnson (Liverpool), Brown (Manchester United), Upson (West Ham), Terry (Chelsea, capt), Lescott (Manchester City), A Cole (Chelsea), Bridge (Chelsea), Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Lennon (Tottenham), Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Barry (Manchester City), Lampard (Chelsea), Carrick (Manchester United), Gerrard (Liverpool), A Young (Aston Villa), Milner (Aston Villa), Rooney (Manchester United), Heskey (Aston Villa), Defoe (Tottenham), C Cole (West Ham), Crouch (Tottenham).

Aaron Lennon is back, after an impressive start to the season with Spurs. And big Peter Crouch is back too, for the same reason.

It’s the third David James-less squad in a row now, giving Robert Green another crack at becoming England’s number one #1. And say hallo to Wes Brown, back in the squad after a long injury induced absence. Seem’s Brown’s inclusion counts as cover at both right back and center back, allowing Capello to cheat a little include Crouchy as the fifth striker.

I’m happy to have Wes Brown back at Right Back for sure. Also with Spurs playing with as much confidence as they are, I’d like to see Crouchy take the “Big striker” role at least against Slovenia.

Glen Johnson owns the RB Position. Wes Brown isn’t as good as him. As Johnson can run down the wing, cross and cut inside and score. Also, he can play on he right wing.

Tbh Foster hasn’t impressed me. James should be over him. It seems Capello’s mind is up. Robert Green will be England’s No.1 keeper at the WC.

If we beat Croatia on the 9th, pack your bags, we’re going to South Africa.
And for the most part, I agree with Joel, James should still be England’s number one.

Joel – I would agree and he is brilliant going forward, but I remember quite a few stray passes from right back the last few times he’s played for England. He needs to buck up the defensive side of his game.

Oh, I guess p2p.eu has got the date wrong, I was already surprised why it listed today as the day for the England-Slovenia date. I thought what the hell, why are they playing on thursday instead. Haha!
