In Holland, before the WC2006, the KNVB (Dutch FA) stated that there were no expectations for that tournament, it should be seen as preparation for EURO2008 and van Basten would stay on no matter what happend at the World Cup. This was not received well at all!! How could the KNVB dismiss the most important football event as a training exersise? Every self-respection football nation should have ambitions reaching further than the QF !! Even if your recent results aren't very good, you CAN NOT publically say that results are secundary to team-building etc. like in Holland.
