Beckham Back in Business at Milan
Looks like David Beckham’s return to Serie A on loan with Milan (again) went quite well. Milan had a few injury problems, so Beckham played on the right hand side of a three man forward line (with Ronaldinho on the left and Marco Borriello in the middle.
With Fabio Capello (visiting home befor major knee surgery) watching, Beckham played 76 minutes and – based on the above highlights – seemed to do pretty well as Milan beat Genoa 5-2.
Here’s what Beckham’s Milan coach Leonardo had to say:
“David has been training a bit in every position this week because we had a few uncertainties with small injuries, like Pato, [Clarence] Seedorf, [Gianluca] Zambrotta and Pirlo,” said Leonardo.
“David tried every single role and I think this is what he is all about. He is absolutely open to anything and has extraordinary quality and an enormous tactical intelligence. He is going to help us a great deal.”
I’ll resist translating that as “Beckham’s desperate, he’ll play anywhere” and mark it down as a success. Not sure that Beckham as a right sided forward will work for England, and either way I’d still much rather see the pace of Theo Walcott or Aaron Lennon down England’s right flank.
But seems Beckham will almost certainly be part of our World Cup squad, and I have to admit that seeing him playing for Milan again makes me take him a bit more seriously as an England player all of a sudden.
