England’s Official Squad Numbers – James is No1

James indicates where in the pecking order he thinks he is

James indicates where in the pecking order he thinks he is

So after the endless speculation in the comments here at the England world Cup Blog, I can reveal to you the actual squad numbers the players will wear out in South Africa. The most interesting ones are of course the ones where we aren’t sure who is going to start – David James has been handed the Number 1 shirt, which would suggest he is Fabio’s first choice goalkeeper, although he has previously said he won’t tell the players untill the day before the USA match.

Peter Crouch is given Bobby Charlton’s No9, which might suggest he’s a starter, but interestingly Joe Cole has been given the number 11 shirt, and Gareth Barry has been given 14. Can we assume Barry might not be fit from that? I’m not sure.

Michael Carrick might have the most need to worry – he’s number 22 while Joe Hart is presumably third choice keeper wearing the number 23.

Full list below.

1 David James
2 Glen Johnson
3 Ashley Cole
4 Steven Gerrard
5 Rio Ferdinand
6 John Terry
7 Aaron Lennon
8 Frank Lampard
9 Peter Crouch
10 Wayne Rooney
11 Joe Cole
12 Robert Green
13 Stephen Warnock
14 Gareth Barry
15 Matthew Upson
16 James Milner
17 Shaun Wright-Phillips
18 Jamie Carragher
19 Jermain Defoe
20 Ledley King
21 Emile Heskey
22 Michael Carrick
23 Joe Hart.

Any other conclusions we can draw?

Interesting, but I’m not sure it means a huge amount. David James has been first choice, but just because he’s got the number one shirt again doesn’t mean he still is.

Never quite understood the furor surrounding squad numbers. It just shows how much media coverage is being devoted to the tournament this time around. I’m waiting for the first scandal story to break as it nearly always does.

Hi guys, have you got interesting pics and videos ? http://www.mixin.com/users/worldcup_england

exactly. I agree with World Cup odds expert. David James is not really good, I think. he was saved by the pole on the FA Cup final against Chelsea. but maybe he’s the best among other goalkeepers. England should look for a new talent under the bar..

  • Gary Vaginas

I bet gerrard is upset that he is stuck with number 4

4 should have gone to Barry as he is a defensive player. Gerrard should be wearing 7

I think it was an appauling decision by fabio. I will now be rooting for Spain, they have sensible squad numbers!
