Capello: No 100th Cap for Beckham
Several newspapers are reporting today that England manager Fabio Capello will not name David Beckham in his squad for England’s upcoming friendly match against Switzerland. Since Beckham hasn’t played regular competitive football since he moved to America (did you spot the obligatory snobbish European MLS joke?) Capello apparently feels that Beckham won’t be match-fit for [...]
McClaren is a genius!
Best manager in the world!
Brazil will be England’s first opponent in the new Wembley
Awesome.
Holland 1-1 England, The Good and The Bad
The Good:
Rooney finally scored again
Welcome back Joe Cole
Micah Richards looked the business
Ashley Cole starting to look more like a footballer again
We looked surprisingly organised
A draw in Amsterdam is not too shabby
The Bad:
Poor Andy Johnson forced to play wide again
Darren Bent didn’t see any action again
Gerrard, Lampard and Carrick all looked very average… again
McClaren Names Massive England Squad
Steve Mac has named a humungous 28 man England squad for the friendly against Holland. He know you can only play 11 at a time, right?
The only eye-popper is the inclusion of 18 year old centreback/right back Micah Richards. Kieran Richardson misses out, which is fair enough – he’s rubbish, but a [...]
McClaren To Wield Axe?
Hopefully Steve Mac will wield his axe, chop a few big names down to size, and add some fresh blood when he names his England squad tomorrow for the friendly against Holland on November 15th.
Aaron Lennon is back from injury and looking impressive for Spurs, so I’m expecting the dribbletastic right winger to get a [...]
McClaren Hints At Walcott Call Up
Steve McClaren has hinted that Theo Walcott could get another go in the senior team in one of the two friendly games before Euro 2008 qualifying resumes.
Catching Up
The England blog is back and – much like the team – it’s under new management. Shawn was caught negotiating with a fake sheikh about writing another blog for more money, so here I am.
List of World Cup 2010 Teams in International Friendly Action Today
Lots of friendly international football action today. For most (maybe all) World Cup 2010 teams, this isn't just a chance to show off the new jerseys they'll be wearing in South Africa, it's also the last game of football before the provisional World Cup squads are named in May, followed by the final World Cup squad/roster deadline on June 10th. So there's plenty to play for, especially for individual players.
Some big games too, featuring plenty of World Cup 2010 teams going head to head: Germany vs Argentina anyone? France vs Spain? Bring it on.
England vs Egypt should be interesting too, just to see what sort of reaction John Terry gets.
Here is a list of all international fixtures involving World Cup qualified teams: [read more]
The Amauri Saga Climaxes With A Silent Thud
Eighteen months ago, Amauri was perhaps the most hotly debated international in the land - solely because he wasn't an international at all. After a big money & big talent move north to Juventus, Amauri got off to a blistering start in Torino.
This didn't impress Dunga, who refused to call up the giant Drogba-wig impersonator to the shock of many (though he was eventually called for a friendly but pulled out injured), which sent alarms blaring all over Italia because the Azzurri are still desperately searching under every rock in the peninsula for that first striker. And after years - quite literally years - it'll all culminate today when Amauri finally gets his Italian passport.
Yet after all the hullabaloo, no one cares anymore. [read more]
World Cup Legends: Just Fontaine.
When the words "1958 World Cup" pop into conversation, the minds of most typically latch onto one name: Pelé.
It was his coming out party and he deserves every bit of praise he receives, leading Brazil to its first title as a 17 year old burgeoning legend. Yet lurking in the not-so-distant background is a man whose tournament was no less impressive, and still stands today as the single most statistically bountiful World Cup in history: France's Just Fontaine. Zinedine Zidane Shows His Futsal Skills in France '98 vs Algeria '82/'86
Relations between France and Algeria have always been a bit tricky. This isn't the place to discuss the specifics, but there's a whole Wikipedia page about Algeria–France relations if you want to read up. Despite said trickiness, there is one man who can claim to be loved in both countries: Zinedine Zidane.
Born in France to Algerian parents, Zidane is unmistakably proud of his dual identity. So yesterday Zizou and other members of France's 1998 World Cup winning team played a game of futsal in Algeria vs a combination of the 1982 and 1986 Algerian World Cup teams.
The idea seems to have been to promote good will and friendship between the two nations. A worthy cause of course. But I know you (like me) are probably more interested in seeing Zidane in action on the futsal court. Don't worry, there's plenty of video below. [read more]

CL Recap (finally): Internazionale 1, Chelsea 0
You're probably asking yourself: Is this really necessary? Do we really need to recap what was an appalling evening in pretty much every sense. Sure say that rather large anti-Chelsea group that invade this place every time we're bounced out of the world's 'most prestigious' club competition. The loyalists, well you're ...
Fulham 4-1 Old Lady
I think I've sobered up. Fulham rallied to put four past Juventus and will play Bundesliga Champions Wolfsburg in a few weeks. Wait, no. That still doesn't read right. One nugget of information I've noticed little mention of is the absence of Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie. Last week he manhandled Bobby ...
Arsenal - West Ham Preview/Match Thread
West Ham United Position: 16th, 6-9-14 (27 points, -12 goal differential) Recent Form: WWLLL Away Form: 1-5-9 Last Meeting: West Ham 1 - Arsenal 2 (1/3/10) This match is probably a little tougher than it looks at first glance, but really, there's no excuse for anything less than 3 points tomorrow. ...
Red Devils Offside - Episode 6 - Man Utd vs Liverpool Preview
Apologies for the late post here, been a bit busy. Mostly watching basketball. But between games I managed to record a new Red Devils Offside podcast. My guests in the studio were Albert Ottati (a Liverpool fan) and Patrick Brigman (a diehard United / Kentucky / skipping work to record ...

Our next must win match
There can be no understating the importance of Wigan's upcoming home fixture against Burnley, where anything but all three points is a necessity. What worries me most about our chances is that although the Latics have been able to upset some solid opposition (Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston villa etc), we have ...
