The Rooney Nike Advert: Whattayareckon?

rooney ad

Some people object to this image of Wayne Rooney in a Nike ad. Some don’t.

What do you think?

  • http://webleedgreen.blogspot.com BG

Honestly… I think it’s pretty badass. How could you not like that?

  • Bobbio

I object to the blatant nipple exposure! Put a shirt on Wayne!

  • http://webleedgreen.blogspot.com BG

Apparently Ulises de la Cruz of Ecuador wants to kick Rooney… He must not like the ad.

“Rooney is obviously a very good player, everyone knows that. But the fact he is probably still not totally fit gives us a big boost as well.

“Perhaps I can give him a bit of a kick to test it out, although I don’t want to end up with a red card!

  • frank

That´s the best thing the Nike guys could do. I mean he is simply ugly.

  • Maturana

    GO ULISES!!!!!!!

  • Andy

i hope theres one round here, i have a few cans of spray paint that are just dying to be used…

  • Binarybloke

The team should all line up looking like this for the national anthem!

    (apart from Crouch obviously)

  • sombrerero

    that´s just nasty

  • Joseph

    Looks pretty cool.

Although at first glance it can look like a teaser poster to a gory horror movie :D

  • mek

ok… which of you johnny foreigners wants to kick him looking like that? man… he looks nails… good on them… class.

As for german hetro boy frank… maybe the reason germany haven’t done so well in recent seasons is because klinsmann doesn’t pick ‘ugly’ players or something :p

  • mek

BinaryBloke… “The team should all line up looking like this for the national anthem!

    (apart from Crouch obviously)”

yep… cuz he shouldn’t be in the starting line up ;)

  • Julia

Kinda scary at first but pretty cool.

  • Cajun Nick

    From the linked article:
    “…the Christ-like pose of the striker…

    “‘Wayne’s a good Catholic boy…

“The trivialisation of Christ’s suffering is highly offensive to Christians and to God…

As a “good Catholic boy” myself (the priest used to wake me up early Sunday mornings when he needed an extra altar boy), I’ve got to say that I DID NOT think of Christ and his crucifixion when I saw the ad.

I saw the St. George’s Cross (symbol of England) painted on Wayne’s too, too white body. I saw fierce patriotism. Who can fault that when it comes to playing in the bloody (pardon the pun) World Cup?

By the way, I also saw images of Braveheart flash through my head.

  • Lisa

I say they should have just painted his broken foot…even over we know about the hype about “The Broken Metatarsal”

  • dila

Binarybloke=The team should all line up looking like this for the national anthem!

    (apart from Crouch obviously)

–>i could NOT possibly image gerrard’s like that lol (^_-)

As Chinese,I don’t like it.It looks so uncomfortable.

  • Cajun Nick

    From the linked article:
    “…the Christ-like pose of the striker…

“Wayne’s a good Catholic boy and I think the obvious crucifixion nuance is one part of it…

“It therefore brings to mind the crucifixion to many people…

Like Rooney, I am a “good Catholic boy”, and I have to say: I DO NOT think of Christ’s crucifixion when I see the ad.

I see fierce patriotism, not agony. I see the St. George’s cross, not blood. I see someone who needs to spend time in a tanning booth.

Frankly, the image that the ad reminded me of was William Wallace (Mel Gibson) in Braveheart.

Sure Wallace had blue, not red, painted on him. But for me the similarity was this: warriors ready to take on the world, single-handedly if need be.

  • Cajun Nick

    Oops…double-posted again!

Sorry for the double-post, but I’ve been having trouble posting on the blog sites lately.

So, the next day, I’ll retype my post, and submit it again…only to see both of them appear.

    Go England!

  • ranndino

Religious people are idiots. It’s nothing new. Nothing wrong with the ad. Looks rad.

  • Cajun Nick

People who call religious people “idiots” are idiots.

  • CB

Looks like Shrek having been attacked by something from Resident Evil

  • Charles

That is way cool and in your face, like it or not… well done nike…where can I buy one?

  • joyville

That is a great inspiring image-Rooney’s as englands saviour

  • moi

    But…isn’t Rooney technically Irish?-the git.

  • JmRssll555

I think it is a fantastic symbol of England and there is absoloutely nothing wrong with it. The idiots who say there is are just looking for more ways to get at Rooney, pretty sad. Can I buy a copy/ print off a copy in A3 form.

    C’MON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!

  • read

maybe instead of that cross, they could have placed the following message:
I got owned in the england vs portugal match at the 61st minute when my teenage hot headedness got the better of me and i just had to stomp on someone’s privates and shove my fellow club player.

and add him holding a red card on each hand too.
