The Push-Me-Pull-You of Public Opinion

June 26th, 2006 | By: Shawn | 23 Comments »

The BBC condenses comments posted on its World Cup message board evaluating the English performance thus far.

It’s pretty much divided the way the chat here has gone: On the one hand, ‘we are rubbish and lucky to advance’; on the other, ‘who cares how we look so long as we’re advancing?’

The english is the most overrated
in this world cup. It´s amazing
how the media turned a bunch
of talentless players into superstars, making people believe they can really win the cup. Go learn to play football with brazil and argentina first.

There’s no doubting that if we won the world cup this year we would be the most boring team ever to win it

Trog:

I was thinking this morning as I was watching Italy/Australia how similar the Italian and English campaigns have been so far: injuries, struggling scorers, ugly defensive victories and one win after another.

That said, Brazil, Spain, Germany and Argentina have all been entertaining and successful thus far. And England will have to get past one, likely two of them to hoist the cup.

Oh, I see where you’re coming from. I never had much invested in England winning this one, just maintaining their reputation. They aren’t making it past Brazil, and I’d pick any of those teams, excepting Spain, over England at the moment.

Argentina are taking this one. And you have to know how galling that is.

Still, dont under-rate England too much. Im not saying we’re going to win it, but better performances do come against better teams.

This place is getting silly… how many rose tinted/sh** tinted shades are peaople wearing?

Brazil have been pretty awful except for the game against Japan when Japan HAD to win.

Italy have been far worse than England… Argentina were good for ONE match… Spain have been good for ONE match… Germany have been better, but probably because they are at home…

What a crock of crap lmao.

sometimes wonder if people forced to listen to the commentators even see the same game (I turn the volume off personally).

A little statistic – England has out shot Argentina 2 to 1 so far – and that includes shots on target. If argentina hadn’t played a side that bowed in front of them and stepped aside to let them score 6, nobody would be particularly impressed as yet.

Brasil is always Brazil. Nobody will really know which team this is until they get into a tough game. So far Germany is the most impressive. Followed by Spain.

Also nice to see how the Australians and Swedish really want England to learn how to play football – wonder why they don’t want their own teams to learn the same thing? (OK – that was a low blow at Australia – valiant effort from them this time – although can’t say they ever looked like scoring).

Go right ahead fooling yourselves that England have no chance, but this competition is wide open. Only Germany have played to their full potential so far and they haven’t really been tested by a decent side (especially since Sweden failed to turn up).

Portugal whooped manchester and liverpool this year and the world cup wont be any diferent. Go Portugal. And friends dont forguet, at the end of the game dont waste your time talking about why you lost again and how we went there 2 times and scored 2 goal, just call us cheaters and move on with your life. We are used to that.

What’s the point of all this bickering? Fandom aside, England – if they get their act together – has got a great chance of doing some damage in the cup.

I’m tired of “rubbish this” and “my team is better than your team because we’ve won more in the past.” It’s all rubbish, lets just enjoy the fact we get a chance to watch all these GREAT international games that some Americans (me) never get to see with the rubbish television programming in the USA. I’m just sad it’s almost over already.

The more I watch England play and keep chalking up the results- the more I suspect that the Goddess fortuna may fancy the English.

Maybe if the queen can have an affair with sepp (which wont happen as sepp is old but not yet aged) hence fixing matches so england can go to the final!!!!!!
The english will always be a bunch of players that were good and well known but will not, i repeat will not actually win or even contest to anything!!

Neil – English born and bred??? What the hell are you doing in Argentina? Earning a living ’cause you can’t get a job in England? Didn’t pass your English O Level did you? Go back to England where you belong and stay there, Argentina doesn’t need any more English losers like you. The English team is relying on an old player who needs a facelift and on a hooligan bruiser like Rooney. How pathetic! Give me a break. By the way, you can keep the “Falklands”. They have like a million skinny sheep and 400 inbred ‘British’ citizens. VIVA MESSI Y RIQUELME. VAMOS ARGENTINA.
