The Portugal Match: The Battle of the Managers

It’s Big, Brassy Phil vs. Inscrutible Sven, and Big Phil reckons he knows who’s better.

  • forca

    GOOSE
The only wanking girls was the Netherlands fans and it’s big talking team.

Fans dressing up like girls and crying all over the place.
I bet you expected big things but you should know that when you come to play Portugal your gonna lose by now.

Oh, but it’s not the same team, over and over…try next time cry babies

    Go Home and cry…Englands next!

    FORCA!!!

  • James

England rox so much they will kick any teams ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Steve

Rooting for England for 2 reasons: tired of hearing about ‘66 and like their players (except Rooney), and feel the Oranje got jobbed by the Portuguese. Heard Maniche’s post-match comments about how Portugal was “just trying to play football.” That match was a disgrace to football. Loved the pics of Deco and Gio VanB. sitting together in the stands like two schoolboys just sent to the headmasters office. Sums up the game, doesn’t it?

  • Paul

‘This is the *third* time Big Phil has met Sven, and if he beats him this time, he gets to keep him.’

LOL heard it on the radio…

    Well it made ME laugh!

  • goose

England should be aware of Portugal, those basterd handbags got us going on sunday, we tried to match their diving and cheatin, they got us all worked up!!

Sven better instruct Rooney cause theyll try to wind him up and have him sent off..

PLEASE beat those wanking Portugees girls who are so full of themselfs right now, PLEASE

    greetz

    WIJ HOUDEN VAN ORANJE

  • Picanha

goose, don’t lose your gander. POR won. Period. If HOL wanted a “fair” game, it shouldn’t have instigated. All POR did was give as good as it got.

Rest assured, though the english are not likely to play dirty (neither were the dutch, theoretically), after that last game with the dutch, if anyone plays dirty, it won’t be the Portuguese. There is too much to lose.

  • Picanha

shawn, sorry, i didn’t respond specifically to your thread. After reading that article, it doesn’t seem to me that Scolari is saying he knows better, he’s just stating his opinion about how he feels he must work as a coach in order to get the most out of his players. Do we expect him to say “oh, you know, i’m o.k., but Sven is a genius”?
As far as i can tell, he’s just giving a quote & like most quotes, they will be parsed the way the reader wants to. Not much interest there.

  • Mario F

Goose… you are still here??? :)

I tought you were home by now..i will send you some Port wine so you can chill…and by the way you should change coach..

    Dutch newspaper today:

“Holland is back to training…they want revenge in 2010 against Portugal..this time the players promiss to eat grass instead of smoke it”

    Said Van Basten ;)

  • http://england.worldcupblog.org/1/todays-news-in-the-new-sven.html Pedro P

Hi John! Last time POR played Brazil we won 2-1. They’re not scary to us. Althought they are better. Last time against ENG we won and the previuous time we came back from 2-0 down, to win 3-2. And you are NOT better. Sorry. Cheers… ;-)

  • owen

picanha – have to agree with the comments about big phil – I think the Sun just wanted to play it anti-sven and did so. It wouldn’t be hard to play it the other way – lots of respect and sven is a wily and cool customer.

it’ll be a tough game but I think that portugal will play it very differently than against holland – england is a very different team and the one thing you do NOT want to do with england is give away free kicks – portugal will want to make england beat them in open play – and I am sure they will…. ;-)

  • Gascoigne

    anyone can answer this question?

the english league is the BEST in the world. seeing ManU, liverpool, chelsea is really a pleasure.

if their league is so great (and i know most, if not all of you, agree with me), why cant the national team pleay just like they do in league?

  • E. Silveira

Gascoigne: the English league isnt the Best in the world, certainly one of the best…

The national team cant play as well as the club teams because most of the great players on the English club teams…arent English!

    Silveira

  • John

England is going to advance easier than many think. Mark my words. Portugal won the battle against Holland (and the ref), only to lose the war to England. I don’t see how Portugal will survive the loss of Deco and Costinha, most especially if Ronaldo also misses with a bum leg. Thigh injuries are notorious for taking a long time to heal (as we American Football fans know all too well).

Call it England 2-0. Don’t think about Brazil. That’s too scary to contemplate just yet.

  • Picanha

2-0 for England? Don’t know, i’m not Nostradamus.
Nobody is irreplaceable on the Portuguese team & the bench is deep. Deco (& Costinha, can’t recall) didn’t play against Mexico (nor did Ronaldo or Carvalho or….)& POR still won.
Mexico is not an easy team, nor is Holland. Not to say that POR will beat ENG, esp. since ENG is going in seeking revenge from the past two Euros cups, they’ll have the added incentive. But that may also make the curve balls curve a bit too much. This is a very different Portuguese team from the last euros, one that doesn’t depend on a single player. We have no Beckham, but for most of this tournament, it seems, neither did ENG ;)
I’m actually glad Deco is out, we need him well-rested for Brazil.

  • Rolf Habich

    England is doomed.
    Their soccer is apreciated by
    E n g l i s h fans only.

    Portugal’s soccer is appreciated by s o c c e r fans.

  • Jonnnoooo

Sven is a good couch? I’ll have to get him for my living room when he leaves England after going out to Brazil.

  • Joao

To you Argentines, one introduction: Falklands.
That said, still on you: had Belarouz been sent off in the start of the game (as he should have been), Holand would have been beaten up. Holand was a mediocrous team. And you think POR played ‘hard’? And about Holand? No? Please, open your eyes at least one time in your life.

    To finish it: Falklands.

  • tom

Im not english but really support england on their next game as the portuguese were a shame, that’s not football mates! play rugby next time. Everyone is sorry for the Dutch team who did so well , so just wish a fair clean game and see england show their best.

  • dick

three lions will roar on Saturday, ! Watch out Portugal.

  • Harry

Portugal Pack your bags. Your going Home!

  • Dougy

Good luck England! Majority of football fans in Oz will be cheering for you!

  • England Fan

Gascoigne: Yes I agree with you. I think the answer is the world cup always happens after a very long greulling Premiership season plus the weather conditions are very hot for the English. Let’s reverse the situation play the World Cup before the Premiership season and get those South Americans/Europeans playing in the Winter and it would be a totally different story, they would suffer big time!

  • Aurelio

England has decidedly been underwhelming in this tournament. Beckham can shoot when the ball stands still. That’s great, but it has obvious limitations.

The game could go either way, but I suspect Portugal has the edge.

  • http://brazil.worldcupblog.org/ Euler

I’m disgusted to see how there are some people blaming Portugal for that violent match. Holland removed C.Ronaldo from the pitch by a criminal tackle!!!! Argh!!!

England did nothing until now. They have no heart (Rooney, maybe) and Portugal will send them home to their Spice Girls doll house.

If Brazil wins over France it would be a lot easier to face England, but Portugal is a real team and the next game will show that.

  • D

Forca, don’t think u understand the meaning of the term wanking lol

  • D

or maybe just your usage of it there is a little odd

  • http://www.englandallstars.com Joey

Pimp my Sven! Go and pimp him ahead of the England v Portugal game!

    http://www.englandallstars.com/pimp.aspx

  • Anna

I think England should take care. Portugal think that the game against England has a special “taste”, since they were beaten in 1966!!!!!
England didn’t play very well in the last match, against Ecuador, but Englad should take advantage over the fact that Portugal won’t count with Deco and Costinha.
Although I live in Portugal, I’d love England to win!! And Sven is a good couch (my opinion).

  • http://england.worldcupblog.org/1/todays-news-in-the-new-sven.html Pedro P

@ Goose: Oranje was great 20 years ago and very good 8 years ago. 6 Years ago you were just good (played home) and managed to get to the semi’s of the Euro, like POR – who were defeated by the champions that time. Not on penalties.

POR has grown and NL has crossed the peridod in which should have slowly regenarated the team, rather than insisting in “sacred old-cows”. That sudently, were put to the slaughterhouse by van Basten, a former striker (almost only former defenders make good coaches, cos they are not arrogant and KNOW what the team suffers if the front men don’t help out, and just sit and cry or show off). I’d say you did very well for a completelly unexperienced team. Didn’t loose against ARG + victories against the others in groups. HOL doesn’t win over POR since 1991. I’d say there’s a trend there… 6 wins for us + 3 draws in 10 matches. POR was stronger in midfield and, sure, it could have gone both ways cos you were good. But unbalancing your team with a lot of good looking attacks and no discipline in the pitch whatsoever, will lead you to a defeat. That’s POR’s history, much more than yours in the last years.

Who did NL beat in 2000? POR beat ENG 3-2 (coming down from 0-2), Romania 1-0 (also went thorugh the group), Germany 3-0 and Turkey 2-1. In 2004 it was Russia, Spain, England and Holland, non-stop. You guys? Yeah… And lost to the the Czechs having a 2-0 lead.

You have a tallented squad, but hey, Spain are light years ahead of you, currently, and lost yesterday out of lack of backbone – FRA was smart, better and capitalized on what they could do at the moment. There’s no team that wins it, not being smart. Put your eyes in Brazil. The world is saying they’re not playng good enough. Yeah… For what? They’re winning super comfortably. Why burn all the energy NOW? To reach the final and loose it cos you got dry getting there?

Bullying your way up or hiding in the name doesn’t work. Sorry, Goose. You go up with a lot of sweet.

  • http://www.cput.ac.za futebolblinger

Only gay guys, and girls who like this team, hey i’m English live in South Africa and supporting Brazil!!
This England team is full of hype and it will never win the WC cup ever again till the apocalypse OR Jesus come back as us christians would say it and hey maybe he’ll give the cup to the english to hold!!
    This team is BAD,BAD,BAD,BAD,BAD,BAD,BAD……X60

  • Robert

I find it rather funny that people are blaming Portugal for all of the unsportsmanlike plays. Maybe you should go watch the ENTIRE game again. Holland initiated that type of play. Portugal responded. And The skirt wearing Holland team got exactly what they deserved.

But, the past is the past. So please stop your whining. Go back to the Netherlands.. Take off your skirt and bra.. and try to act like a respectful man…

The Holland team is gone.. We are now onto Portugal v. England.

And as far as Deco and Costinha..
Portugal is not a 1 player team. Portugal has many talented players.. (just ask the Mexico team)

    Portugal will win..

    FORCA PORTUGAL!!

    AS ARMAS! AS ARMAS!

    AS ARMAS! AS ARMAS!

England Fans – You’re the laugh of the World. You have the oldest Football association in the world, you say that you invented football but the truth is that you never evolved the match till the day foreign managers start to arrive your country. Sven, Mourinho, Wenger, Benitez and others but you instead off thanking this guys for helping, no you call them incompetents and try to put them away.
You can call what ever you want to the Portuguese national team but never forget to say that they are much better than yourselves.

  • England Fan

Euler: You sound bitter darling! Australia out are they?
Never mind always the 2007 Asia cup to look forward to.. Yaawwwnnn!

  • England Fan

Magriços: Laughing stock of the world…
Well let me just say this…

We do not cheat, roll around on the floor like Women or headbutt our way thru football games, you do! If you think that winning a game this way makes you better than us…. What kind of person are you?

  • Pedro

Portugal is a dirty team playing? read the statistics of the qualification phase…

    http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/t/stats/index.html?zone=eur&ct=7

Today, at the press conference with Eriksson, British journalists were a joke…”portuguese players play dirty”…uhh uhh uhh…

Paul Gasgoine, Vinny “The Butcher” Jones,… were British, weren’t they?…

“Dirty” players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira, Tiago, Boa Mortem, Nuno Valente are paid millions to play in England…

Seems like a paradox, or maybe
    just pure masochism?

Play football next Saturday & c u next European Championship, in 2008…

As a long sufering world cup fan, last night was the final straw and epitomized the malaise that is running deep in this beautiful game. Really, how many more world cups must be subjected to blatant corruption and interfering?
It seems that FIFA have yet again set the wheels in motion for their influence to decide the ultimate winners of this once great tournament.
A great English fan I am, but a proud supporter would I not be if England win this year. Fifa have decided; a mediocre England team will win it.
Let’s look at last night: Unclear as to who might become England’s next opponents the refree decides to take action and tears strips off both sides to weaken them as much as possible for the next round against England.
The world needs to open its eyes and realize that we have lost our beautiul tournament.
Let’s look at some hitorical evidence of Fifa interference: Maradona was cheated in 1994 for speaking out against FIFA, Ronaldo the same in 1998 and even this year. In 2002 Italy were robbed again and Korea made it to the semi to promote football in their potentially very rich market.
The stage is set yet again, for a FIFA-chosen winner to emerge. England will not have to rely on magic to win, because they have Fifa on their side. Why not just present the cup already to England so that the rest of us who care about the game can watch great football to see who “wins” as runners up?
I am an England fan, but if we are to win the world cup, let’s win it fairly and let’s not ruin the greatest game in the world.
Please sit up and listen. Please take note; this tournament is not what we believe it to be.

  • David

To be honest guys, I think the only reason why most people hate England is cause the english press make the England team the almighty team and they are the best and the press say stupid and horrible things about the rest.

No team is the best cause one day you beat a good team and then the next you lose to a crap team.

As I said the english press make the football world hate England which is a shame.

To the Ref, keep the cards in your pocket or else

  • http://england.worldcupblog.org/1/todays-news-in-the-new-sven.html Pedro P

@England fan: better put your brown pants next saturday… ;-) Even better, put them today, cos I can smell it already… ;-)

At least show some respect, man… We (PORTUGAL) respect ENG. Actually, I listen to BBC5 every day, and WE, the Portuguese, respect ENG more than yourselves.

Don’t call a team that had one of the game’s all time legends (EUSEBIO) the laughing stock of the world… Just makes you look sao bad…

I understand… It’s the fear, the pressure, the Erect-Sven factor, Beckham underperforming (Victoria’s getting upset and is delighted to go and watch the boys playing… I guess she’ll like to see England play too), Hargreaves left alone just like Rooney, feeling depresed, I mean… I understand all that. But it’s not POR’s fault…!

POR’s just trying to do their best – which was somewhat better than yours, last few times we met. Is this OK with you…? Or are you gonna try and beat us by insults…?

BTW, this is how we win games:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLQVRWm2M2w&search=portugal%20football

  • http://england.worldcupblog.org/1/todays-news-in-the-new-sven.html Pedro P

@David: only read your comment on FIFA now. Beware, or ze germans and Blatter will find you… ;-)

I honestly wish for a good match between a POR side, stronger than most want to admit, and surelly cleaner than most are saying, simply out of ignorance.

    PLUS,

an England side that’s always strong and will always deserve any other team’s respect. For the history, players, passion (atypical for a northern side), etc… Also stronger than what their own press shouts…

  • Eusébio13 (1966)

I´m impressed… how a small contry like Portugal, with less population than all the other teams that are still in the WC, have too many good players.
in 10 million is harder to make a good team than in 50 million(england), this is to show you that some contries are made to play football, and others play it because is “cute”…

It is possible that Portugal losses against england… but that will not take from Portugal the winning spirit and the love for our country.

Another thing, it takes a person from, as english said, “the 3º world” to give some interess to the Premier League, and give chelsea the titles that they didn´t have.

  • goose

@MarioF, sure, im still here my friend,
ill be looking out for you, did you ever get the translation; KANKERHOND??

@England Fan: I thought you were calling the “Magricos” (POR’s team of 66) the laughing stock of the world. Sorry, sorry.

Anyway, you can still use those brown pants… ;-)

  • John

Whoever said England doesn’t cheat, did you watch the game where Crouch pulled the T&T player’s hair to gain an advantage and score? Um, that’s cheating, mate. Of course, that was just one of the many examples of FIFA refs ruining this WC, but it’s a glaring one.

I think England will beat Portugal, by the way. Ronaldo will not be 100% (thigh injuries take a long time to fully heal), and they’ll be missing a key defensive player and Costinha too. It’s a shame, because I think a healthy Portugal with a full roster would beat England in extra time.

  • Troglodyte

Figo is my new favorite player. That head butt was awesome. Not kidding.

  • England Fan

    Pedro P:

That’s ok, I have them ready, you really should get yours out too!

@John: Costinha IS the defensive player we’ll miss…

  • Magriços

    Wich England do you represent?
The England that respects public and other teams or the England that travels around the world to create confusion, or the ridiculous Newspaper England that invents interviews, adapts the reality to the will.
You have one of the better teams in the world, that I admit. Who ever goes ahead in the WC i dpn’t know and nobody knows because Portugal as the same quality and we play fair.
The game against Netherland was a mistake of the referee and the Orange Team. Cristiano Ronaldo was put away from the game in a way I never saw in football, i have no doubt that was deliberated, Portugal should make a presentation to Fifa about it.
In 10 faults we have 9 yellow cards and we had the first red card since the Korea/Japan in 2002.
Do you still think we don’t have Fair Play?
Don’t let the Shit Press put Shit on your head.

don’t know about the game on saturday but it’s obvious the portuguese bloggers have definately lost it on this blog..saccharine sweet patriotism..militarism (as armas!)and attempts at humour were generally pathetic (goose don’t lose your gander!)

we all know england is doing bad this time. they have not shown their full potential, and i hope tomorrow they show it, because if things continue as they are, the LUSITANS will crush the brits… and this is coming from a LIFE-LONG supporter of ENGLAND.

    preduction:
    eng 2-2 port
will go to penalty kicks, but cant say who will win, since in penalty kicks every team has a 50% chance of winning.

    greetings from the kamchatka

  • Jesey

Listen…Whatever happenes happens, i think Netherland tried to take out C Ronaldo and people on this blog need to calm down. Who ever wins on Saturday so be it…if its england that just means they have another 4 days til Brazil sends them home =)

  • cosmik debris

I’ve read a few comments in here about why aren’t England as good as our national league teams. Simple answer. Premier league et al are multicultural teams. As for Chelsea, how many players are actually British, ditto Arsenal. If Britain could field a team made up of British players (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) it would be a team that dominated, and I mean dominated.

Let’s hope that today’s game is one played fairly, refereed fairly, and decided in 90/120 mins, not the debacle called penalties, and I don’t say that because England are crap at them. Penalties is FIFA’s wimpy way of deciding the out-come.

  • Jesey
