The Portugal Match: Figo the Diplomat

June 30th, 2006 | By: Shawn | 24 Comments »

Luis Figo is speaking out prior to Saturday’s match, and he has mostly said the right things.

He reckons
England pose a real challenge but claims that his squad knows the English system well and can conquer it with determined play.

He says it’s an honor to play against England and that he and his teammates respect the team and the players they’ll be facing.

He says nice things about his fellow Galactico and good friend David Beckham.

And he reveals that Portugal haven’t been practising penalty kicks.

Sepp Blatter could stand a cup of whatever it is that Figo drinks before he meets with the press….

Mexico 86, 1-0; Euro 2000, 3-2; Euro ‘04, 2-2 (we won); Benfica/Manutd, 2-1; Benfica/Liv’pool, 2-0…
Now, what really makes you think you’re better than us?!
Your tabloid press? Your “colonial” desire to rule the world?
I expect a good match. Few goals, but a good match. And the winner will be PORTUGOOOOOOL, of course.
Greetings from Portugal!

England have not looked very impressive, and that was exemplified after the ecuador game. Portugal plays more attractive.

England time to go home

Just a note about our “colonial desire” to rule the world, we did rule much of the world on two occasions, as for Portugal’s colonial power however, you could write about it on a pin-head , and furthermore English is still one of the major international languages if not THE major international language
if portugal win tomorro ill take my hat off to them but it wud be funny to see my team win just to knock braggarts like you down a peg or two!!

Anglo-Saxon,

But it will be even funnier to watch a small country like Portugal beat mighty England. (ahem once again)

BTW… Most Portuguese are intelligent enough to learn more than one language… Actually most people in the world are..

Q. What do you call someone who can speak two languages?

A. Bilingual

Q. What do you call people who can only speak one language?

Q. The English

Força PORTUGAL!!

AS ARMAS! AS ARMAS!
Sobre a terra e sobre o mar!
AS ARMAS! AS ARMAS!
Pela Pa’tria lutar!

Actually, Portugal had one of the most remarkable colonial empires, especially in relation to its size. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing is another matter.

guys, it’s just a football game…
Why are you talking about “colonial desire” and who speaks the most languages?
Hopefully, the best team will win, so, let’s just enjoy the game Saturday.
I don’t understand why does everybody gain so much hatred towards a country just because of some football game.
It was the same thing with the Ducth.

Actually, my country is possibly THE most hated country in the world, football aside, and even tho I can fully understand why everybody hates us a good number of us Englanders are decent people who take the time to learn another language and another culture but we still get put in the same boat!
I’ve got nothing against the Portuguese even tho I don’t know many but I will defend my country against bigoted comments by people who I know aren’t typical of their country!
If portugal win tomorrow they probably deserve it ‘cos England have played sloppily and Portugal are a strong team but I’m still gonna be waving the old red and white!
Germany, I’m behind you too!
Come on England!!!

England WILL NOT win this world cup. Mongolia, Moldova or Mozambique could win this world cup if miracles happened. But no amount of miracle will allow England win this world cup.

Anglo-Saxon

Your country has now been overtaken by the US as the most hated country in the world. You’re not far behind because of the policies of the buffoon of your prime minister.

Hey guys, I hear Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed interest in playing for Real Madrid. Nistelrooy is at cross-daggers with Sir Alex. Becks left. Scholes eyes are out. Giggs is getting older. And I’m worried shit about Man U’s future.

Anglo-Saxon,
You sound very level-headed and I appreciate your honesty. I am a Portugal supporter and hope that we experience a great game may the best team win!!!

I will salute the winner which ever it may be.

Pauleta, You had a pretty easy path and Robert; let’s show some class especially on someone elses blog. There is no reason for topics related to colonial powers, or number of languages spoken. Here we discuss futbol.

Cheers and Forca Portugal!

Actually, Andora is the world’s most hated country.

I think England wakes up and plays at a higher level than it has… and wins by 3-1. I’d prefer Portugal… but Brazil will beat France and then annihilate the Crusaders.

Robert’s comment was just petty and ridiculous. It’s a joke that so many of you come on this blog just to say bad things about our team.

Why bring up colonial past? This is a football not a history blog. Just for the record, no colonial power has anything to be proud of. Hitler may be demonized as the most evil man in history but what he did to the Jews and what he wanted to do to the world wasn’t any worse than what England and Portugal did to the peoples and nations they invaded. If you wish to boast, celebrate, and laugh about what you colonial powers have done, and continue to do, then you can’t except people to be surprised, saddened, or supportive when something like the London subway bombings or 9/11 happen. But hey, keep on your militarism if you don’t mind some “terrorism” in return.

Let’s just hope that Portugal don’t adopt the same tatics that they used against Holland, but it’s Portugal, only way they know how to play.

Rooney’s foot will have a big X marks the spot on it, guaranteed.

Wonder how many times Figo will go down holding his face today?

Who will get the Figo headbutt? He should trademark it, did the same thing four years ago!

Go England.

Observer - there were far worse colonialists than the English. If it wasn’t them it would have been another lot of far more hard-arsed bastards.
