The Ecuador Match: Player Notes

June 24th, 2006 | By: Shawn | 50 Comments »

Various thoughts by and about various members of the squad:

1) Sven praises JoCo and says of Our Captain, “Defend David Beckham? I don’t think I need to do that. I never understand that question. He will play on Sunday - that’s it.”

2) Michael Carrick is likely to return as holding mid while Owen Hargreaves takes a full back position where Gary Neville isn’t yet fit to play; Jamie Carragher will likely start the match on the bench.

3) John Terry claims that England will step up the pace of the match — and even uses a baseball metaphor to describe the squad’s determination.

4) Our Captain says he’ll deliver — and then subtly blames the others for not being on the end of his errant passes and set pieces in the last three matches.

plus Balfour, as you’re in the UK, why don’t you go down your local Wetherspoons and play ‘dodge the knifing’ as you share your views with the entire pub…

…if you’re as brave as you’re trying to sound

AET… your right it was a boring game.. but at least England won.. They have another day to play…And it’s just the media hyping the English fan as a “Fighter/hooligan”.. They need to sell papers and print space. The stats speak for themselves. Percentage wise very few “English” fans were arrested out of 4000 thousand so far. So we get spend a few days cheering. Lets enjoy it…

did I offend u alan? clearly I did. I touched a nerve didnt I? me a bigot? it doesn’t matter if english football fans are in germany, italy or france the response by the police is exactly the same. they prepare for months for potential violence involving england fans. its a well known fact actually whether you choose to aknowledge this or not? it is in fact true and you know it deep down. people like you instinctively look for other people to argue with. you feed of it so you can promote your blatant contempt for those who are not english. it is arrogance at its best. if i posed my views in an english pub then i would actually be stabbed. thats a fact, and thats my point. though you fail to see that as you are so conceited. with regards to the pictures of german fans throwing chairs at the english fans, its not something that just happened out of the blue! the german fans had been there for over two hours watching their team while a group of english fans had racially abused them. thats what you h

LET ME FINISH WAHT I WAS SAYING. i was saying, thats what you have failed to see. i pity you, i really do. its not that i am jealous or bigoted. if thats the case then you are just as bigoted as i am because you have contempt for non-english people such as the scots. you are the arsehole not me. now go and kiss your queens arse, its her birthday after all.

Ok, everybody.

I’m gonna keep this thread open for comments on the condition that we talk about football and not about one another.

It’s “A Time To Make Friends,” remember….

Chris i totally agree with you! Why do english fans think they are so hard? If they cant win at football there is always a fight after the match they can win! It gives the UK a bad name, you never see welsh or irish fans fighting and scottish fans are always being awarded for good behaviour, so why cant england follow suit?

hey shawn…you are right :-)
balfour…no matter who started the struggle…german hooligans have been in the pub…and they met english hooligans…even if they would have been hooligans from ghana…or france…it would have ended in a mess…i wonder what might have happened if the people in the pub would have been german fans…

lets not mention Rangers v Celtic then, no history of violence there whatsoever…

Scotland was recently named the most violent country in the developed world, by a UN report, ahead of England (and even the U.S.)… no hooligans whatsoever up there then…

OK, I’m done! ha ha

yes thats true, so whats your point? it has nothing to do with football? hooligans are everywhere. look at english clubs in the 1980’s, banned from all european because of football hooligans. look at the major foobal tournmaments england have been invoved in over the last 16 years. in each ocassion english football fans have been arrested for fighting. thats a fact. yes there are holligans up here but they do not take it abroad. we stand together and support our team. if we win we win, if we lose we lose. our reaction is exactly the same. scottish fans do not riot or provoke violence. thats the diffrence. celtic and rangers fans who hate each other at ibrox and parkhead will sing scotland songs abroad and have a good time with fans of other nations, regardless of who they are. if you new anything about scotland or scottish football then you would know this. also i am not a fan of celtic or rangers. i couldn’t care less about them or their fans actually. i am in fact a dundee man so there, but you have no idea who they are as you do not know anything about scottish football life. ok, i’m done! ha ha (how mature eh)

As a man who has known sir balfour for many a year oncew again i have to agree with the true gentlemans words. If the english want to talk about derby rivalry ie rangers celtic they should remember their own north london rivalry were i seem to remember that the goooners and spurs have had many a violent occasion with each other before and after a game. As for england fans abroad wot do we really expect from a buch of lager swigging five bellies with tattoos from head to toe that think that a pool cue is a weapon and not actually a accessory to a sport. So wot did u expect from the germans for them to go running to the police going please sir he called me a nasty name. No your morons got the response they wanted a fight it is just sad that u think your big enough to start a fight but not big enough to take the responsibility for it

Hooligans aren’t just an English problem. It’s an international problem. Check out this article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12646650/ They may be picking on the Germans, but the Dutch, Polish and Ukrainians are all mentioned in there too. I can’t defend the idea, I think it ruins the sport. There’s no other sport that you have to be careful leaving the staidum in case you get a bottle/chair thrown at you. I guess that’s the pay off. Oh an I think it’s great that the Scottish have managed to keep their hooliganinsm at home. I wish all the other countries with these problems could learn from this.

its good to see them mighty england humilated the conquering ecuador 1-0, we were just merely playing with them like a cat would with a three legged mice, its good to see that we havent played a decent team in the world cup yet, just an ageing swedan team who we simply let have the ball in the 2nd half.

I can’t wait for the world cup winners parade back in London, its good to see portugal have players suspended and christiano ronaldo possibly injured,so an easy peasy lemon squeezy job ahead of us.we’ll show big phil he was wrong to turn down the england job and have the right sidekick in the former trophies coming out of their arses middlesbrough man steve mclaren.who wants a world cup winner anyway.

Ive got stuck into england world cup fever, its good to see us english are giving the germans and police a good kicking in the streets of their big cities, they tried to invade us nearly 70 years ago,so we’ve invaded them.

why is it every tournament there are english fans rioting, even in euro 96 in their own backyard they were rioting in london.

i predict england to loose their nerve and bottle again and loose on a penalty shootout to germany in the final.

Once again Mr Dodds you deal with the cold hard facts in a way that highlights exactly the state english football and its hooliganism problem. I couldnt agree more with you. With regards to this Mr dodds you are a completely right. your behaviour is your responsibility and the england fans should do well to remember this.

last nights result for england is not something i would be entirely happy about if i was a supporter of this nation in question. England were lucky not to be 2-0 down in the first half for a start. once again even a small team like ecuador can exspose englands defensive vulnerability. Better teams such as brazil, portugal, spain, argentina would have punished england and sent them out in the first plane home last night. Scrapping past ecuador 1-0 is not something from which many positives can be drawn. i fear for england should against portugal, who are full of world class players with the ability to punish defensive errors. Then again i couldn’t care less if england win, though i will be suprised if they somehow manage to beat portugal.

Kiss my arse, I’ve plenty of family in Scotland, and it’s full of the most moronic, knife-wielding thigs on the face of the earth!

There are plenty of decent Scots too, but don’t try and tell me that the Glasgow estates etc aren’t filled with absolute maniacs who would knife ME on the street just for having an English accent.

Let’s not start giving the world a bullshit impression of what Scottish culture is really like, eh. More civilised than England my arse!

Now, now, Scotland is civilised. So there’s no need for that language. Don’t you have all the kiddie fiddlers? (And the highest number of reported racial crimes). ……What’s the difference between a yoghurt pot and England? The yoghurt pot, left long enough would grow a civilised society!

Ha ha ha, whatever Balfour.

I’m suprised mate, really, even the most patriotic Scot would have to agree there is a certain percentage of your population that make Begbie from Trainspotting look like Father Christmas…

And once you get onto the darker side of Rangers & Celtic, and their links with Protestant verses Catholic secterianism, not just in Scotland but in Ireland, too, well excuse me if I prefer any number of London derbys to that sitution!
