Sven’s Men

May 8th, 2006 | By: Shawn | 18 Comments »

Sven Goran Eriksson’s squad for Germany:

1) GK: Robinson, James, Robert Green

2) D: G. Neville, R. Ferdinand, Terry, A. Cole, Campbell, Carragher, Bridge

3) M: Beckham, Carrick, Lampard, GErrard, Hargreaves, Jenas, Downing, J. Cole, Lennon

4) F: Rooney, Owen, Crouch, Walcott

5) Standby: Scott Carson, Luke Young, Nigel Reo-Coker, Jermaine Defoe, Andy Johnson

THOUGHTS

No surprises at the back.

What a lot of midfielders!

Rooney/Owen — when you wish upon a pair of fragile stars.

Is Walcott the future or is Sven completely mad?

Ledley King’s foot must be worse than we thought.

How is Shawn Wright-Phillips — who ignited England’s last friendly vs. Uruguay — not included even as standby? Jose Mourniho owes the lad big-time.

Darren Bent?

Healthy this is a strong squad. But right now it’s not healthy — questions still surround Campbell and Ashley Cole, and there are the pair of superstar forwards to worry about. If Crouch and Walcott are the front line, expect Joe Cole to win England’s Golden Boot.

After so much chatter, not much truly surprising….

Hmm. Is Walcott obviously better right now than Andy Johnson? Much less SWP.

Must say that no Shawn Wright Phillips is a surprise. Could it be because his dad bad mouthed Sven?

Sven is crazy! Taking Walcott who has not made an appearance for Arsenal instead of Bent, is ridiculous!

Think this re-affirms that our midfield is the key to winning the cup. We got solid defenders and only need to win every game 1-0, right. Having pace at the front and an option like Crouch I think is a good call.

Why Couldn’t Sven have gone before the World Cup?!?!!!!! He’s made a complete hash of it. He’s gone and taken his old bum chum Hargreaves and Crouch and left out Wright-Phillips and Bent. He’s taken a load of injured or unfit players and what’s this about Reo’Cokup.

What a joke! I’m no Charlton fan but I can’t help thinking that Sven must’ve been having a close conversation with David Dein!! To put Walcott in front of Bent makes no sense at all… And the back four half made up of injured or freaked out Arsenal players is bordering on bizarre!

I think the choices are a bit… different to what people would be thinking. Lennon is looking on fire but i think he should have been tried out in a friendly or something before they put him straight in the world cup squad, taking Wright-Phillips’ place. Walcott? No. Don’t get that choice. Holland have no chance. Makaay, Davids AND Seedorf? Pfft I know he likes the young lads but you have to have some experience. These three have all played at the highest level, for club and country.

I really don’t like the idea of taking Theo Walcott. Hasn’t even played a game in the Premier League yet. Sven’s better off taking one of us to the World Cup.

And Hargreaves? Why?

[...] Big shock today is that England’s normally conservative coach Sven Goran Eriksson has gone where Bruce Arena feared to tread and called up teenage prodigy Theo Walcott. [...]

I’m hearing a lot of anti-Walcott sentiment here. I honestly think he’ll make a big impact coming off the bench.

Sven is so super-conservative (Hargreaves, Jenas etc) that he must have seen something amazing in those training sessions to convince him. I’ve seen plenty footage of him (mostly You Tune highlights mind) and he looks something else.

He has pace like you wouldn’t believe, add this to great technique and composure in front if goal and you’ve got someone who could light up a World Cup game in a way Darren Bent never could.

Everyone seems to forget that Wenger is the man who found Toure, Eboue, Senderos, Fabregas and Flamini.

You better trust Wenger’s judgement when it comes to young players.

what is the fuss about Rooney? He won’t be fit, why taking the chance…as for Owen, he’s not completly fit, coming from a long injury. Crouch is not any threat to a world cup defence and honestly not swift enough in scoring goals. you need swift attackers that can make goles and threathen any defence…Sven should consider Bent and Defoe, as well as Walcott. As for the defence, i won’t recomend Campbell and Ferdinand…Campbel is a bit slow to react to swift strikers, Ferdinand is a very inseccure defender, i would choose his younger brother over him.

Walcott might be a shock inclusion but he will make an impact. The fact Sven hasnt seen him play can be overstated because he claims to have watched him in training more than anyone else.

Being 17 I feel is an advantage, he can play with no fear and will be an unknown force at the World Cup. If Sven hasn’t seen him, there’s no chance Paraguay, T & T or Sweden would have either!

As for Hargreaves, it is a suprise but I’ve read that he’s been on the form of his life this season at Bayern playing regularly.

Ultimately Sven has picked the FORM English side (other than Darren Bent and Walcott)as well as an incredibly FAST side. Everyone else has had consistently good seasons and will head to the World Cup with confidence. This also addresses the Wright-Phillips issue - he hasn’t played 90 mins all season for Chelsea, Lennon has been unstoppable!
