Sven: English for Lame Duck

January 23rd, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 1 Comment »

In a move that you can’t exactly call surprising, England’s Football Association has made it official that Sven-Goran Eriksson will step down following the World Cup this summer.

A statement on the FA website said: “The FA can confirm that Sven-Goran Eriksson will leave his post as England head coach after the World Cup in Germany.

“FA chief executive Brian Barwick reached agreement with Sven and his advisors after discussions today.”

This was the compromise I expected from the moment I heard the word “Svengate.” It allows both sides to save face with Sven staying in charge of the team he has built and the FA showing that it won’t tolerate stupidity.

One interesting scenario to think about: What if England wins the World Cup? Do you think there would be pressure on the FA to keep him in charge?

Seems to me it’s the best of a bad situation. The man is a money hungry liability.
