Stevie G: The Genius Hits The Road

May 14th, 2006 | By: Shawn | 4 Comments »

“The Genius Hits the Road” is the title of my favorite Ray Charles record. If you don’t have it, you’re missing out: classic R&B versions of standards like “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” “Alabamy Bound” and “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” plus the almost-title track, “Hit the Road, Jack.” Genius indeed.

Anyway, I bring it up because Steven Gerrard proved on Saturday that he absolutely deserved the player of the year trophy he won a couple weeks back. His performance in the FA Cup final vs. West Ham was epic — and I say this as a Chelsea supporter who wanted the Hammers to crush Liverpool.

So now Stevie is off to Germany, where he’ll have the likes of David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole beside him. If he continues in this form, England could get deep into this tournament

marco - I’m with you there. It would be pretty amazing if England went out in the group stages AND Luca Toni scored 5 goals on them. Seriously amazing. Actually, it would be just as amazing if Italy scored 5 goals in the group stages.

Seriously though, as a Liverpool fan, I’ve learned that a match is never over as long as Stevie G is on the field. That said, I wonder how well a central midfield combination of Lampard and Gerrard is going to work. Neither is a particularly good defensive midfielder, but they’ll have to take turns marking the other team’s playmaker.

I almost prefer Beckham as the holding mid, since he’s played the role for Real, and Gerrard has been effective on the right side of the midfield for Liverpool.

OK, anyone who eqautes the genius of Brother Ray with the near genius of Stevie G is alright by me. Good looking records too. But come to think of it, of the England players maybe Joe Cole plays with a little bit of that Ray Charles swing. Gerrards’ more like Screaming Jay Hawkins.
