A number of ideas about how to limit gambling: no English players may take a flutter on the World Cup, the casino in Baden-Baden will be off-limits, pots in clubhouse card games will be relatively low-stakes (200 pounds: blimey), etc. But the root problem is hardly addressed by this: professional athletes are adrenaline junkies and betting large sums is just another form of thrill-seeking. This isn’t gonna go away just because Rooney was embarrassed into paying his debts.
