Is the Deal Done?

April 27th, 2006 | By: Shawn | 4 Comments »

First reports say Big Phil has accepted.

I could give a toss whether he’s English or not. He’s a proven winner at this level, a known quantity as a man and as an international football manager, and arguably the very best choice that could have been made.

I never suspected that SvenGate and this excruciating search might end this well.

Fingers crossed for the final confirmation.

Who cares will will be the official England boss come next season? Well, we all will, but what I’m essentially trying to say that just as my friends in Asia (like Stephen Thanabalan from Singapore) agree, the highlight is not going to be after, but rather at the World Cup in Germany. Even an Asian like Stephen Thanabalan predicts England is going to win the World Cup after 40 years, citing Germany as the perfect reversal with the signs there since the 5-1 result in 2001, with pretty much the same team nuclei. He also predicts that all English clubs will sweep the board this year from Liverpool in the FA Cup, Middlesbrough winning the UEFA Cup and Arsenal to beat Barcelona in the Champions League, and ultimately do English club football proud whilst the National Team wins the biggest prize a month later. He’s won me lots of cash in the past with his accurate predictions (i.e. Man Utd in 1999, Liverpool in 2005). My only qualm as I said, is with the press and those negative fans, I mean, Why can’t we English be as optimistic and focus on the tournaments and glory rather than worrying about a new coach after we’re already world champions? Crikey, let’s prioritise people.

So you really think an English club will win the FA Cup? I’ve got a wait-and-see attitude myself….

More seriously: Arsenal to beat Barcelona? That would impress me and the rest of the world.

Finally: why so much focus on the coaching situation? What else to talk about? We don’t have a squad yet, after all.

Cheers,

Shawn

I heard he accepted. But they won’t talk about it.

Latest news is that Scolari’s has turned it down. This is what he said:

“There have been 20 journalists camped outside my house since yesterday,” he said today. “I don’t like this pressure. It may be part of another culture, but it’s not part of mine.”

“The FA has a list of names it will choose its next manager from, but mine isn’t one of them because I am closing this matter now.”

“I am happy that they considered me but I don’t want anything more to do with this because for two days my life has been invaded and my privacy destroyed.”
