Glenn Johnson Under the Knife

March 30th, 2006 | By: Shawn | 3 Comments »

The England and Chelsea fullback has a hernia. Which I can only assume he developed by raising his hand repeatedly and trying to catch Jose Mourinho’s eye to request some playing time. The season’s just about over and he’s got a whopping seven appearances. That we’re still talking about him as a potential key player for Germany indicates how thin England’s back line is.

You know, all this time I Glen thought Johnson was a left back and that was the reason he kept getting suggested for the squad. But apparently not, so I have no explanation for it. I don’t think he’s got a shot at going to Germany.

That’s certainly the only place I can recall him playing for club or country — thrusting far too rashly up the left touchline for my comfort and then rushing back to make ugly tackles.

On that side of the defensive line I rate him #3 at best — behind Wayne Bridge and then whoever is in better form but belongs in a middle that’s too richly packed: Stephen Warnock maybe.

I think the confusion about his position might be down to a semantic thing — left fullback vs. left wingback vs fullback vs center back.

The Chelsea website has him listed as a right back, which is weird. But yeah, I’d put him third or fourth on the list, on whichever flank.
