In a bid to separate himself from stories that didn’t name him, Ashley Cole is suing newspapers that ran stories about sex antics between two premiereship players. He says that although he wasn’t named in the stories, the internet is flooded with chat that one of the rompers was he. And, of course, if it was on the internet it must be true….

It dawns on me that the person who advised him to pursue the suit is also the person who will be paid to press it — the only potential winner, in other words.

Ashley, mate: sit down, have a wheatgrass shake and have a good long think about how this looks.
