English FA Demand Semi-Finals or Else. But Why?

By: Daryl | May 8th, 2008 | No Comments »

FA Brian BarwickYou’d think the FA, the people who hired Steve McClaren, would be in no position to make demands about performance. But they’ve told Fabio Capello that he has to reach at least the semi-finals of World Cup 2010 or Euro 2012, ore he can look for another job.

Given that England are, as Laurie pointed out on The Offside, a quarterfinal team by tradition, and given that we didn’t even make it to Euro 2008, I’m thinking the FA need a healthy dose of realism.

By: Daryl | May 5th, 2008 | No Comments »

Gabi Agbonlahor u21While other, better teams are busy preparing for Euro 2008 (I’m looking at you jealously Russia and Croatia) England are having to think about the future. And what better way to do that than with an Under 21 game?
Here’s the squad for the England vs Wales Under 21 friendly at Wrexham’s Racecourse ... [read]

Fabio Capello and the Future

By: Daryl | May 3rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Fabio Capello halloSo… no England at Euro 2008 this summer. And there’ll be constant reminders of that from now until June 29th. No doubt it’s a disaster, but at least it brought about a change of management. And that’s about the most positive spin I can put on it:
No Euro 2008 = No Steve ... [read]

Beckham Gets His 100th, But Same Old Same Old for England

By: Daryl | March 27th, 2008 | 3 Comments »

Becks gets his 100thThe good news from England’s 1-0 defeat to France is that Beckham’s 100th cap is out of the way. We don’t have to talk about it ever again. The only question now is whether he adds to his collection. On last night’s evidence I’d say… maybe. He looked pretty much match ... [read]

Rio Ferdinand Gets the England Armband

By: Daryl | March 25th, 2008 | 3 Comments »

Rio Ferdinand Gets the England ArmbandIf you’d told me Rio Ferdinand was the new England captain five years ago, I’d have choked on my Snakey B. Rio was talented but dozy, and not the sort of man you’d want leading you into battle (or anywhere else.)
But now it’s 2008 and we’ve all done some ... [read]

Beckham Survives Capello’s Cull

By: Daryl | March 25th, 2008 | No Comments »

Hi, I’m Daryl and I’ll be stepping in to take over from Matthew who’s had to give up England WCB due to other commitments. Not a problem though, there’s plenty to talk about.
The big news, apparently, is that Beckham survived Fabio Capello’s culling of the England squad from 30 down to 23. Shouldn’t really be a big surprise. But a ... [read]

Why was Beckham opening a soccer school in BRAZIL?

By: Matthew | January 31st, 2008 | 6 Comments »

Something just struck me about the whole “Beckham dropped” story. David Beckham was in Brazil today, promoting one of his soccer academies. Why would Brazilian youths need to learn about football from an Englishman? What in god’s name is he going to teach them?
“Alright lads, now we’re going to learn about thumping a long ball upfield…”

Why Capello is right to drop Beckham

By: Matthew | January 31st, 2008 | 10 Comments »

Fabio Capello’s first England squad selection is out, and it’s everything I’d hoped it would be. Here’s my position-by-position analysis:
Goalkeepers:
Scott Carson - Aston Villa
David James - Portsmouth
Chris Kirkland - Wigan
It was a foregone conclusion that Paul Robinson would be dropped from the England lineup, given his recent form, but it’s still amazing how quickly he’s fallen from grace. In the ... [read]
